Moving to a sector I want to cover but with a brand new analyst…

So… I joined ER after medical school and am covering HC services sector. When being hired, I expressed to my DOR I wanted to be covering biotech as I found it more interesting. Fast forward one year and they hired a biotech analyst to my firm. I have been asked to move to his new team.

This is great, but the issue is this person has never been lead an analyst at his previous companies (always was an associate). My current analyst (while not II ranked) has been around forever and knows everyone on the street. He’s a great guy to learn from and would provide great buyside opportunities.

What do I do here? Have about 1.5 years of experience in NYC and am 27 trying to move to the buyside eventually.

As you probably know by now, moving between teams comes down a lot to the relationships you have with your old/new analysts.

With a new analyst, it’s likely that they will be more driven and could push more work your way. They are also figuring out how they want to position their franchise, so there might be a lot of trial and change type of situations. The upside is that you might be more involved in the coverage and given more responsibilities to grow alongside the new analyst. They might view you closer to a peer especially if you can provide insights into the team.

Given that your goal is to move to the buyside, it seems like having broader coverage experiences could make you a more attractive candidate. And if you want to cover biotech on the buyside, it would certainly make sense to want a biotech sellside role.
