Am I finished? Please tell me if Im making the right decision about my school
Hello everyone,
I've recently been accepted into Columbia University's School of General Studies, which I'm thrilled about. I have a strong academic background, holding a 4.0 GPA from my previous school, and I'm set to transfer as a junior or potentially a sophomore.
My main concern lies in my future career prospects. I'm going to major in Political Science, but my true passion lies in investment banking. I'm curious to know if anyone here has insights into whether a Political Science degree, coupled with a strong academic record from a prestigious institution like Columbia, would position me well for a career in investment banking.
Specifically, I'm aiming for roles at top-tier firms, whether they are bulge bracket (BB) or middle market (MM) banks. I'm aware that many successful bankers come from finance or economics backgrounds, and I'm worried about how my Political Science degree will be perceived by potential employers.
Is it realistic for me to aim for these roles if I perform well during my time at Columbia? Or am I at a significant disadvantage compared to my peers with more traditional finance-related degrees or just being a general studies applicant? Can I still do MBB like at McKinsey or a good consulting firm instead? Additionally, what steps can I take to improve my chances of securing a job in investment banking post-graduation?
Any advice, experiences, or insights you could share would be greatly appreciated.
