2025 Full Time ER?

Hey guys, rising senior at a target studying math/cs, finance. Last summer worked in PE and this summer at a tech startup. Recently learned about the ER field and am very interested in it. What is recruiting for 2025 full time for both buy/sell-side looking like? I know I’m not doing an internship in finance this summer but would love to end up in a full time role in the industry. Thanks!

Based on previous WSO threads, here are some insights on full-time recruiting for the class of 2025:

  1. Preparation and Timing:

    • It's great that you're starting early. Full-time recruiting for 2025 will likely follow similar patterns to previous years, with banks and firms beginning their processes after assessing their summer intern return offers.
  2. Background and Experience:

    • Your background in math, CS, and finance, along with your experience in PE and a tech startup, positions you well for roles in Equity Research (ER). Highlighting your analytical skills and industry knowledge will be crucial.
  3. Recruiting Landscape:

    • For both buy-side and sell-side ER roles, networking will be key. Given that you haven't done a finance internship this summer, leverage your existing experiences and connections to get your foot in the door.
    • The market conditions and demand for ER roles can vary, but generally, there is a steady demand for strong analytical talent in both buy-side and sell-side firms.
  4. Actionable Steps:

    • Networking: Start reaching out to alumni and professionals in the ER field. Informational interviews can provide insights and potentially lead to referrals.
    • Skill Development: Brush up on your financial modeling and valuation skills. Consider taking relevant courses or certifications if needed.
    • Application Strategy: Keep an eye on job postings and apply early. Tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight your relevant skills and experiences.
  5. Market Conditions:

    • While specific details about the 2025 recruiting cycle aren't available, it's important to stay updated on market trends and firm-specific hiring practices. Forums like WSO can be valuable resources for real-time insights and advice.

if you do your research you might see that ER recruiting is on an as needed basis not on a hiring class as in banking. It can be challenging to land a job in research straight out of school, it's easier if you network at firms you're interested in so that the director of research has your resume on hand when they're looking to hire. (this is for the sell-side)

Dont want to doxx myself but on a extremely highly ranked analyst think your highest earner. Hours are too much putting 90+ a week and want to go to a chill non ranked team.

Okay so if you're a current summer analyst keep with the coverage through the summer and then have a discussion with the DoR at the end of the summer about returning. If you already work at a firm and perform well in the highest* performing group you shouldn't have an issue finding a position for when you graduate. It's harder switching firms, think about it from the new firms perspective. Okay he's not returning to our competitor, why? The most likely conclusion from not returning FT to a SA position as that you weren't offered to return. Just switch analysts or coverages it won't be hard. If you're a month into it and its 90+ hours a week. Well, get better, suck it up it's only 2 more months.

Or don't at the end of the day its only a job, there's billions of jobs.
