Got admitted to Mannheim University, now what?

Recently I just got admitted to Mannheim University, Masters in Management program and I am planning to specialize in Finance. From what I have seen, Mannheim university is considered a great school in Germany, and I just need some advice regarding how to proceed from here.

My main goal, preferably, is to settle and work in Germany afterwards and I am willing to put the time and effort to learn German in order to maximize my chances. But I still need some help regarding how to find internships and part-time jobs during my studies, not only to fund myself but also to gain some work experience. What are some tips would you all give for international students to succeed in Germany and able to secure a full-time job after graduation.

Based on previous WSO threads, here are some detailed tips and advice for international students aiming to succeed in Germany and secure a full-time job after graduation:

Learning German

  • Language Skills: Prioritize learning German as it significantly enhances your employability. Many companies prefer or require proficiency in German, even if the working language is English.

Internships and Part-Time Jobs

  • Networking: Leverage your university's career services and attend networking events. Building connections can lead to internship opportunities.
  • University Resources: Utilize Mannheim University's career center for job listings, resume workshops, and interview preparation.
  • Online Job Portals: Websites like LinkedIn, Glassdoor, and Indeed are useful for finding internships and part-time jobs.
  • Company Websites: Directly apply through company career pages, especially for large firms that have structured internship programs.

Gaining Work Experience

  • Internships: Aim for internships in finance-related roles. This experience is crucial for building your resume and understanding the industry.
  • Student Jobs: Consider part-time jobs or working student positions in relevant fields. These roles often offer flexible hours that accommodate your study schedule.
  • Research Projects: Engage in research projects or assistantships with professors, particularly those related to finance.

Securing a Full-Time Job

  • Long-Term Planning: Start planning early. Secure internships during your studies to build a strong professional network.
  • Visa and Work Authorization: Understand the visa requirements and work authorization processes. Germany offers a job-seeker visa for graduates, which allows you to stay and look for a job after completing your studies.
  • Tailored Applications: Customize your resume and cover letter for each application, highlighting your relevant skills and experiences.
  • Professional Associations: Join finance-related professional associations and attend their events to expand your network.

Additional Tips

  • Cultural Adaptation: Embrace the local culture and work environment. Understanding German business etiquette can be beneficial.
  • Persistence: Be prepared for a competitive job market. Persistence and continuous improvement of your skills will pay off.

By following these steps, you can enhance your chances of securing internships, part-time jobs, and eventually a full-time position in Germany after graduation.
