UK Target University Rankings
I’m a prospective UK university applicant getting ready to send my application of this September and looking to go into IB/high finance.
Aside from the super targets, that being LSE, Oxbridge and Imperial. In what ranking would you all place the other targets/semi targets behind these?
When I think of these schools I think of UCL, Warwick, Nottingham, Bristol, Bath. Potentially also Durham and Kings College.
Am I missing any? And more importantly, in what order would you rank these schools?
The truth is that only individual firms's HR departments know for sure what universities sit on their target lists.

There’s already like 500 threads on university rankings brother, just check those…
the list is as follows targets: oxbridge, lse>imperial>ucl>warwick
semi targets: durham, bath(placements) , bristol+ notts (mainly for the economics course) , edinburgh , st andrews, kcl, exeter
semi/ non targets:manchester, york, bayes business skl , qmul
uni probably doesnt matter as much as your strategy /preparation nowadays but still getting into a target helps
Appreciate that, thankyou
Where do European universities like Bocconi, HSG and ETH Zurich figure in these?
honestly idk- i think domestic unis have a bit of preference but i believe bocconi, hec, stgallen probably are at the same level as the ‘semi target’ uk unis for ug. dont hold me on that though- the only people that actually know are the firms.
Spot on list
Had some Manchester interns on both of my BB/EB springs, so personally would say that they place pretty well
yea i dont deny manchester does get placements- i just think the ratio of placements to students is pretty low- eg ucl has around the same amount of students as manc but definitely places more people into ib
I just put your name on my firms blacklist
Looks like someone couldn’t break into the IBD, not doing anything wrong by asking about which unis are best my friend
Don't be so cocky, it is not a great look at all.

A year 13 showing ego to an assoc lol? buddy he's trying to help you not get doxxed.
Yes you are because if you don't possess the proactivity to find one of the other 5000 threads on this topic you have no hope for IB
Usually at my firm:
50% = HEC LSE LBS Oxford Cambridge
25% = UCL, KCL, Imperial, other good European unis (Bocconi, ESSEC, EDHEC, St Gallen, etc)
Rest = either good US unis like MIT, Berkeley etc, or some random, low-tier UK unis (thanks dad)
Usually for interns, the European guys are MUCH better than the other interns as they have more experience
Thankyou
Forgot that some of the UK unis sit somehow in between tier 2-3 and regularly place as well: Durham, St Andrews, Edinburgh, etc.
I’m not British so can’t really assess how good these are (I guess fairly decent in the UK).
In any case, once people are hired I couldn’t care less where they studied as long as they get shit done, have a positive can-do attitude, learn fast and are fun people (ie not finance nerds but normal people with hobbies and some life experience)
Why life experience matters ? - of my 4 interviews to get into my firm a few years ago, I spent 20mn of the first one talking about martial arts, and 15mn of the second one talking about my South American travels. Recently while recruiting, one of the interviewers wanted to introduce me to his brother in law related to another sport I’m practicing.
Thank you for the insight. As it currently stands I'm going to be taking a gap year and reapplying to university so this advice on getting experience is definitely helpful so thank you
Congrats on KCL!
