Goldman Sachs Investment Banking Summer Analyst Hirevue Overview
Who else got this? Let's discuss.
I know there was a giant thread on this last year, but does anyone have experience with Goldman Sachs Hirevue questions for this recruiting session?

Goldman Sachs HireVue Video Interview
In recent years, all applicants have been asked to participate in HireVue Video Interviews after applying to a program (internships, full time, and pre-internship programs). Users have said that they usually hear back after recording their interview between a 1 week to a month later to schedule second round or superday interviews. The status of their candidacy can be accessed on the applicant portal.
The interview includes 3-5 questions with 30 seconds to prepare a response, and up to 2 minutes to answer. HireVue stops recording as soon as 2 minutes are up. There is an opportunity to practice this video format in the HireVue tutorial you will see prior to starting your interview. It is recommended to practice preparing and recording videos prior to your interview- HireVue offers unlimited practice trials.
The HireVue Video interview can be inclusive of all the divisions you applied to, but the questions will be catered to one division. One way to find out which division you are interviewing with is to check "reply-to" recipient in that email. Then Linkedin that person to find which division he/she is recruiting for.
What Questions Does GS Ask In First Round Interview?
Users have typically been given behavioral questions, and occasionally technical questions depending on the division they applied for.
- Why GS?
- Why this division?
- What does this division do and how does it fit into the firm?
- Tell us about a time that you had to work in a team.
- How does your experience and background apply to this division?
- Tell us about a project you're proud of.
- Tell me about a time when someone wasn't pulling their weight.
- Tell me about a time when you were faced with a confrontation.
Why Should I Work at GS?
Below is an example answer for "why do you want to work at GS?"
I first became interested in GS when attending an informational session at XYZ school. There I spoke with several alumni from the Goldman Sachs IB Group. After connecting with members of the firm at that event, I was connected to speak to more alumni from the firm who spoke extensively about the beneficial nature of the 3 analyst mobility program and the internal modeling in the IBD group. Recently, I had the chance to come visit the FIG floor and speak with multiple bankers throughout the day. After that experience, I knew that I wanted to work at GS due to the very collegial nature of the firm in addition to the unique program structure.

I got this too this morning at like 4am lol
Same. Does everyone/most people get a HireVue? I know progressing from HIrevue stage to superday can be tricky, but wondering what the pipeline looks like at this stage.
PMd you
Bump
i wonder as well!
spoke to an HCM rep and she said you have to be selected for it, so not everyone gets it
when did you submit your hirevue?
I didn't get an invite, but then again, submitted last weekend. Do they typically not do it all at once, or am I just toasted lol?
I submitted on the 15th, literally the day the application opened.
Ok yeah, so maybe since it's rolling they'd still be sending out HireVue invites on around the same time-frame. Who knows ¯_(ツ)_/¯.
Anyway, good luck!
Check your application status, it'll say if you've been reviewed
Do you know if they have any order for reviewing? Mine only say they've been received.
From the email after you apply: "If you have applied to multiple offices or divisions, please be aware that timelines for review vary."
Does everyone whos application get through the system get a hirevue or if your resume/application is top of the pile do you skip that and go straight to a superday/Assessment center?
Are you guys all IBD?
Also, what location - NYC?
Put three locations 1) NYC 2) SF 3) Chi
Yes
Got a hirevue today as well
Didn't get hirevue yet. applied on the 17th, and was told by an analyst that he marked my profile as "high potential candidate". Did i get dinged?
I networked with a VP level person who said he will flag my profile and "guarantee" me a hirevue when I apply. I have not yet started my applications as recruitment at my target begins in September. Can anyone advise if I should just apply asap, get the hirevue and run with it or wait till September and talk about it with the on campus recruitment team?
You ALWAYS submit an application as soon as possible. IB recruiting is rolling admission. It's not like applying to college.
I applied on on 16th, am I dinged? or I still have some hope
I wouldn't count yourself out now. I think this is for the accelerated process in August. Also, they could be sending out rolling hirevues or doing it by school or by office location etc.
Thanks for keeping my hopes. I am also wondering that they might do it by schools and I attend non-target with no network at GS whatsoever
Can you explain what you mean by accelerated process? (I applied 2 days ago, would that mean I'm not considered for this process?)
Any non-targets get HireVue yet?
Yep I'm non-target
Do you have strong connections there? Just curious on what you might have done to differentiate yourself when applying
Doubt PSU is a target school but I got one.
roll nitts
IDK how relevant this is but. I applied for IMD and MBD on July 18th. Got the hirevue invite this morning at 4 am. But I applied for fulltime, so that might be different. Didn't do any networking, but I did get a hirevue last year when I applied for SA. (3.5 recent grad from semi-target / non-target depends on who you talk to) Also, curious to know the timeline to hear back from this.
Did you guys get the notification through email? Or did you check the website
email
Is this for MBA level recruiting???
Can anyone who didn't apply on the 15th confirm a hirevue?
yes, but for FT ibd
Can anyone who didn't apply on the 15th confirm a Hirevue for 2018 SA IBD ?******
Yes, applied on the 21st for IBD
Had a few questions... - Is anyone here a Sophomore that applied? - How does an alumni pushing your resume to HR affects your status? Are you still required to go through HireVue? Thanks!
I'm a sophomore and I got the invite for hi revue
Does networking help you move onto the superday from the HireVue? Also, are there still HireVue interviews for FT IB recruiting at GS?
I would assume so. I will post an update as things progress.
Submitted my application on the 15th, went to the GS undergraduate camp, networked with Alumni, have 3 relevant internships, 3.5 GPA, studied abroad at LSE, and didn't get a hireview invite... Strong non-target....
damn.. don't lose hope man - you never know.
only thing i'm clinging on to rn is that I applied to Securities SA
Did it say you got rejected on the website??
I am going to be honest. Your GPA needs to be higher. Like 3.85-4.0/4.00. 3.5 might be ok if you attend Harvard, MIT, etc. You really need to network.
GPA scales can be different at each University. Some places have an average GPA of 3.7 whereas some colleges (like mine) have harsh scales where a 3.85 is ~top 2% of class.
Lol you've got to be the biggest idiot. GS is surprisingly very non-target friendly compared to other BBs, they really like people who know their shit & are extroverted/team players. zsdvnm1 you'll get an interview. I went to GS last year & didn't interview until october.
.
idk if that's true. I'm in the virtual insight series and attended another GS diversity event and I got the hirevue
Applied on 15th, app still under "received" status, so no update yet.
Probably got dinged, lol. Oh well
yeah i'm still on received too.. damn was hoping the VP I knew well could pull through
Applied on the 16th for Legal, Human Capital, and GIR and got a Hirevue today. Not sure which department it is for though as none of the applications show anything different.
Was told by HCM that these Hirevues went out by accident and thats why the portals havent changed...very confused by this
wtf lmao.. accidental hirevues for everyone who got notified?
Yep I feel like I'm getting punk'd. I reached out to my contact in HCM asking what divisions my interview was for since my portal didnt change. She said that the HIrevue invites went out by accident and that I would receive my invite at the right time. Apparently we're going to get a communication about it (we were supposed to get something yesterday but I never got anything)
Is this true? What a mess if so...
Just relaying what I was told. Someone should reach out to their contact in HCM and see if they are given the same information
Applied on the 21st of July.
Rising sophomore from a target school, doing an internship at an elite boutique my freshman year and have final rounds interviews at 2 BB for the summer of 2018. Still no invite for HireValue interview.
Apparently the ones that went out were by mistake.
I'm pretty confused because the email says "You may ignore this e-mail. This was a technical error and is not related to your recent invitation to attend a Goldman Sachs superday interview in August." I didn't get any information about a superday even though I'm an accelerated candidate... Not sure what this means.
Are you trolling? I seriously doubt Goldman Sachs would make a mistake like this
Anyone hear back from SLC IBD?
Applied over a month ago to SLC IBD, got my HireVue invite yesterday after a successful networking call last week with an ops VP. Any word on your end? Feel free to PM.
Is this a joke? got my HireVue invitation yesterday for SA London ER. Applied around 22th of July.
Current status is 'application received'
If this was an error, why haven't they followed up with an email explaining the mistake?
what do you mean? the dudes above got the follow up email
I got a hirevue invite but did not get the follow up email
anyone get referred for accelerated IMD and get a invite yet?
Quick question, mine says "Thank you for applying to Goldman Sachs. You are invited to participate in a digital interview, powered by HireVue. Please complete your interview by July 29, 2017." Does this mean that I need to complete it on the 28th or can I complete it on the 29th?
Just be safe and do it early.
End of day July 29th
When did you apply? what divisions? target?
They roll them out over time, different groups get invited at different points, mostly depending on application submission time and role you're applying to. I've heard no one ever watches them but they have algorithms that read your responses, check for certain phrases, etc.
Yeah I also heard a computer sifts through your resume and looks for keywords and company names
Did hirevue ibd interviews today. Cant say much about the interview itself, but the hirevue submissions do get reviewed. HR always contacts a semi-senior analyst to review the submissions. Interview wasnt difficult, best advice I can give probably is go through your resume and projects and look at them critically. Ask yourself: How did I do, how did others do, teamwork related assessing, eye for detail etc. Gl everyone!
Oh I really don't like questions like that. "Tell me a time when you had to pay attention to detail." So vague.
I don't know if much has changed since last Summer but I completed a hirevue interview last year and got invited to a super day with the Securities division. If I remember correctly I was asked 5-6 questions. The questions ranged from "Describe a time when you have exceeded expectations while you were working with a team" to "Imagine you were working with a deal team. Describe how you would contribute to creating Synergy between the parties involved". Again, this was a year ago so I don't remember the exact questions but generally they were situational. Nothing technical was asked. There is no real way to prep for these as I have heard the questions tend to be randomized and range form simple behavioral to slightly technical.
Hope this helps
wow those are some obnoxious questions lol.. was the superday more technical with more markets questions?
Yes the hirevue interview was a bit tricky. Rather than the questions being extremely difficult, I found myself stressing more over the short time they gave me to answer each question.
As to the superday, the organization of the event was pretty standard in the sense that you cycled through 6 different interview rooms with 2 interviewers in each room. Since this was Sec., the interviewers were vice presidents from Index options trading, derivatives sales, prime services, and other markets related divisions. Questions began as standard "walk me through your resume" questions and quickly began to increase in difficulty and specificity as they were catered to my responses and resume. Overall questions became fairly technical as interviewers started asking me about technical skills and projects I had listed on my resume.
It is important to note that before each interview began, the interviewers would remind me that they were measuring my ability to communicate an idea, my level of overall knowledge of the markets, and most importantly, my tenacity.
And I forgot to add that my hirevue invitation went to my spam folder so I had to contact an obscure applicant help department to reactivate my invitation. I was on the phone with several people in HR throughout this process and took the time to network while the problem was being resolved hahaha. I go to a non target and have a GPA below 3.5
Were you a diversity recruit?
No, no diversity recruitment although I am South American and grew up in South America. I went through the regular online application for Sec Summer Analyst. I am studying at a US college
Do you think that they have regards for non-native speakers at the hirevue interview? Since some of this questions seem very difficult to answer in such a short time frame when its not someones native language.
I am a non native English speaker. I do not think changes the way you're responses are screened. Certain level of articulation is expected.
https://streamable.com/csg1o watch this and you will be set
too funny lol
So still a bit confused what the verdict is on this.. HireVue were sent out or were they mistakes?
I checked with my contact in HCM -they were not sent out by mistakes
has anyone gotten a hirevue invite that was not applying primarily for NY?
Yes I did. London and other offices. Also contacted HR, no mistakes were made.
You've got a HireVue inivitation for London SA? When did you apply?
Were the questions situational or behavioral?
more behavioral than anything. best advice is just to grow a pair and just do it lol it becomes more nervewracking as time goes by since no one is going to post the exact questions, whether you like it or not.
.
I took it. Completely easy. Don't know why everyone was hyping it up on WSO.
OMG I haven't applied for GS. But you guys are going to have interviews.
So it's 30 sec prep and then 30 sec to answer each question, no do-overs?
How long after submitting the HireVue do you usually hear back about a superday?
I know of people that heard back little over a month and some that heard back within a few days. I think it all depends on how busy the hr/analysts screening the interviews are and also if you are a backup for superday or not. At one BB superday, I met a candidate that was called for the superday the day before and had to fly over 8 hrs overnight to make it.
Did anyone who did financing IBD get a hirevue?
Yeah
So, i was jw if these hirevues are office specific? Will I have to redo one for the other offices I applied to? I applied to San Fran office also and I have no idea if they have also gotten back to people.
Is the "2018 | Americas | New York City Area | IBD | Summer Analyst" position a general application to investment banking? Or is there a separate position for financing (i.e. if you are interested in Lev Fin)?
You pick either classic IB or financing in the IBD application.
is HireVue automatic with an application. Do you know if it helps to have a cover letter to get a HireVue?
Did anyone's portal change after completing the Hirevue
still application received
Yea, mine also says application received and I finished my HireVue last week.
Any body who submitted application last week received a Hirevue?
I submitted mine on the 24th and got a HireVue.
Which division and what office?
I have never heard about anyone receiving an HirVue so early even in the past years... did someone applying for IBD and MBD (London) already received an Hire Vue?
How do you judge this phrase from a grammatical point of view: "aided conducting the due diligence process through valuations and ad hoc financial analysis" Is it correct?
maybe change to "Aided the due diligence process though valuation and ad hoc financial analysis"
Ok thanks... I was worried about the fact that valuations was plural and analysis was singular. Do you think this is grammattical incorrect? What's about the HireVue? Did you get one? Speaking about London...
Aided "in" conducting the due dillegence process through valuations and ad-hoc financial analysis
Maybe?
Ok thanks... I was worried about the fact that valuations was plural and analysis was singular. Do you think this is grammattical incorrect? What's about the HireVue? Did you get one? Speaking about London...
Just got Hirevue invite. How many situational questions were there?
5
Got one for Securities today (applied to IBD and SEC) - 3.9+ from high target and previous finance experience. Wondering if people have specific info about the GS securities specific questions? Have been in a classic IB mindset at other places, want to make a good transition over to Securities
The 5th question is on a market trend that is interesting
were other ones behavioral like why GS, etc. OR more of the tell me the time when...
Just got a hirevue invite for securities, deadline is Saturday
Does this mean that we would have to submit before Saturday? Or would Saturday be fine?
Saturday is fine
Just did Hirevue for Securities... so hard. There were like 4 aspects to each question and asked for so much depth. goodbye GS lol
Where any questions technical? (directly related to markets) or were they mainly behavioral?
all behavioral along w a favorite market trend. behaviorals were very difficult
I have a securities first round coming up. What was so hard about the behaviorals?
like i said, multiple aspects of each question that you need to touch on
