FT Question

Currently SA at MF Credit shop in NY from semi-target. Networked way into interview process and got offer at UMM buyout shop in T2 city for FT that explodes before summer ends. MF internship has historically low return rates (around 30-40%), but having great experience so far and like credit much more than expected. Haven’t gotten any indication on performance as only been on desk for 2 weeks. What should I do?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some steps you can consider:

  1. Evaluate Your Preferences and Career Goals:

    • Since you mentioned enjoying your experience in credit more than expected, consider if this aligns with your long-term career goals. If you see yourself in credit long-term, it might be worth staying the course.
  2. Assess the Offer from the UMM Buyout Shop:

    • Consider the brand value, location, and potential career trajectory at the UMM buyout shop. If the offer is strong and aligns with your career aspirations, it might be a safer bet given the low return rates at your current MF internship.
  3. Seek Feedback and Performance Indicators:

    • Even though you've only been on the desk for two weeks, try to get informal feedback from your supervisors or colleagues. This can give you a better sense of your standing and potential for a return offer.
  4. Network and Gather Insights:

    • Continue networking within both the MF credit shop and the UMM buyout shop. Speak to current and former employees to understand their experiences and the potential for growth and development in each role.
  5. Consider the Timing and Exploding Offer:

    • Given that the UMM buyout shop offer explodes before the summer ends, you need to make a decision relatively quickly. Weigh the certainty of the UMM offer against the uncertainty of the MF return offer.
  6. Backup Plan:

    • If you decide to stay with the MF credit shop and don't receive a return offer, have a backup plan in place. This could include applying to other credit or buyout shops, leveraging your network, and staying active in the job market.

Ultimately, the decision should be based on where you see the best fit for your skills, interests, and long-term career goals.
