Robertson's Return

With all of the big names who have left the industry over the past few years, it is good to see a legend rise out of retirement and jog back on the playing field. All of you guys know Julian Robertson by name, but many weren't far past diapers when he was one of the rulers of Wall Street. To many of you, he was just a big name from yesteryear.

All of that will change this week as this legend of the game becomes your contemporary. The near 80 year old Robertson, returns to take the helm of Forstmann Little & Co., the private-equity company co-founded by Ted Forstmann, who died November 20th.

Though Julian's gig will be little more than greasing palms and finalizing sales deals, it's a good lesson for you monkeys of the kind of spoils a lifetime in the game can bring.

The private-equity fund that holds the assets expires on June 30, 2012, and the holdings must be sold by then, said the New York Times, which first reported Robertson’s new role at the firm. The fund’s limited partners may agree to extend the deadline, the paper reported. Robertson’s job would include overseeing the eventual sale of the companies, according to a person familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified because the firm is private.

There's a lot of daydreaming and ambition sharing on WSO, and I hardly doubt you can find a better path to follow than Julian Robertson's. Many men have made millions per day on Wall Street, but few have spit out hedge fund managers and successful disciples, like Julian Robertson.

Take a good look boys, there's a hall-of-famer amongst us.

Tip your cap and keep it moving.

Perhaps one day...we'll speak of you with the same reverence.

I guess the only hedge manager after Richard Dennis and Soros who had successful proteges. Btw this market is fucking insane dont know how anyone can survive.

The only mentor-protege team that can touch Robertson's is Rubin's IMO: Eric Mindich, Richard Perry, Frank Brosens, Daniel Och, Tom Steyer, Eddie Lampert, among others.
