Boutique IB on Resume
Hello all. Currently interning with a boutique IB and wanted to know how I should format it on my resume for upcoming 2026 SA applications. Just want to be careful to not over or understate the experience.
If anyone has examples of what they wrote or knows of some good public examples, would very much appreciate the advice.
I'm assuming this is an unpaid internship at a small regional or something since you're wary of overstating the work.
Some general pointers: format and word the same way as you would any other experience. Especially if it's a small unknown shop the first line can be a general description of the firm - "Completing a xx-week internship at a boutique advisory firm focused on LMM waste disposal M&A" for example. Something common is to have a "Select Transaction Experience" subheading where you can describe specific deals and what work you did on them (designed pitchbook, built financial model, researched x, etc.). Include results too.
The most important thing is that you are able to speak to the experience and the details of what you worked on in an interview. This is the best indicator of whether you are overstating imo.
Thx for the help. Should I distinguish between closed/failed/pending transactions or leave that stuff vague and just talk about what I did to contribute.
By results I meant of what you did, like with any other bullet point. Sure you can indicate whether the deals were successful or not but it's not really important and doesn't have much to do with you anyway. For example, one of the deals could be described as "Sale of waste management solutions company for $10 million EV (pending)" (your shop will probably restrict you to giving broad details since they're private companies) with subpoints underneath. You're trying to show you have an interest in the industry and have done some legwork, not that you're some sort of top closer.
How would you write about a banking internship if you just started and don't really have any specific deals to talk about? If I have to submit a resume this week, should I just write it out like any other experience?
Just worried I'll be penalized for not having that standard "deal" structure.
