How has Viking become a pod shop?
Recently created a thread on here regarding the difference in career outcomes between a top SM HF and a top MM HF. I was corrected by many for saying that Viking is still considered a SM HF, as most people said it is now essentially a pod shop. That being said, what makes Viking a pod?
Considering the fact that some of their PM's in the past have had 9 figure net worths, I am assuming that a certain percentage of their AUM is allocated to each PM and then the PM and his/her team receives 15-20% of their PnL. Can someone please correct me on this and explain their comp structure and why they are now considered a pod shop?
theyre not as pod-y as a true pod, but its not a head PM calling the shots
lot of guys run their own books/PnLs with full discretion and get formulaic payouts on that pnl
so its more pod-like than SM-like, but maybe more accurate to simply say it's a multi manager model
and a lot of the managers there trade very pod-esque in terms of speed (fast money, playing quarters) and running more neutral
Please no PM there has a 9 figure net worth what are you talking about
I know bankers that make more than some of my Viking friends
Think he is talking about some of the comp numbers that came out in the ZIRP era for some of their CIOs / PMs that spun out. I’d be surprised if Sundheim didn’t have close to that when he left.
Agree that it’s likely no one there beyond Halvorsen, Ott, and maybe Jing, Kauffman, or Zinober has 9 figs net worth.
Half the people you mentioned were founders or CIO - I can confirm they’re worth several hundred M, but that applies the the CIO or any fund like that
As for senior PMs - yeah they probably are as well, but again, that applies to business heads / senior PMs at a lot of large SMs and MMs. A regular person with PM title at a non platform (non large platform)— very unlikely to be over 100m NW. In the MM world it’s doable (I’ve actually heard more in a pretty short time period, but those are generally unusual cases).
Regular way PM / senior analyst type partner at a good SM gets paid don’t get wrong, but not 9 figures…
Sundheim started d1 with $500m of his own money so I think it’s fair to say he reached a 9 figure net worth during his time there
Can’t equate someone in CIO seat for many years who crushed it with a regular employee…
Lol pms at viking don't get anything near 15-20% of their pnl. Are u crazy?
I am asking because I don’t know. I understand that my numbers are way off. What would you say it is?
