Appropriate intern backpack/bag

This might be a dumb question but I'll ask anyway. I am fortunate enough to land an internship at a REPE and I was wondering what type of bag would be appropriate to carry my stuff in? I assume a backpack would be fine but I'm not sure what the norm is. Would anyone have any recommendations?

For an internship at a Real Estate Private Equity (REPE) firm, it's important to maintain a professional appearance, including your choice of bag. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some recommendations:

  • Backpack: A sleek, professional-looking backpack is generally acceptable. Opt for one in a neutral color like black, navy, or gray. Avoid anything too casual or flashy.
  • Tote Bag: A basic black or neutral tote bag can be a great option. Look for one with interesting metalwork or subtle embroidery to add a touch of style without being over-the-top.
  • Briefcase: If you prefer a more traditional look, a leather or faux-leather briefcase can be a good choice. Again, stick to neutral colors.

Additional Tips: - Avoid "Cute" Accessories: Stay away from overly cute or casual items like Hello Kitty knapsacks or furry purses with varsity patches. - Jewelry: Keep it simple and avoid noisy, jingly bracelets. - Make-up and Perfume: Apply lightly, especially if you'll be working closely with others in a bullpen setting.

Good luck with your internship!

My suggestion is to pick any of the number of 'business' backpack style bags out there - really anything that's well kept is fine. I'd probably avoid the hiking daypacks from the likes of North Face, or a highlighter colored Cotopaxi (although those are pretty fun generally).

I recently bought a backpack from Maverick & Co - they have some nice options, that are functional and look really nice. Can't tell you how long it will hold up - I'm somewhat dubious of it, but seems built pretty well.

I personally prefer leather backpacks. Make sure it’s genuine and not faux.

You can pick up some cheap second-hand ones from designers if that’s your thing, if not you can get one online for cheap.

Looks classy and will last ages if you maintain it. Depends on your taste though.
