Who uses sell-side Strategists? Are they valuable?
I know there are tons of famous macro investors like Soros, Druckenmiller, and Julian Robertson, and there are many macro HFs like Viking.
My question is: do they use sell-side strategists, just as micro investors use sector analysts? If not, then who is a strategist’s audience?
By strategist I don’t mean like economists, I mean top-down analysts that are more focused upon multiple asset classes (equities, fixed income, FX, commodities) and multiple sectors (TMT, O&G, Utilities, Financials) rather than a specific sector within a specific asset class.
Why do I ask this question? Because albeit top-down is a valid method, and quite popular (not considering hybrid), it seems as if strategists are not as popular/glamurous as sector analysts? And what are the exit opps for strategists, are they sought out by HFs?
Viking are macro? lol?
