MM IB on West Coast to VC in Asia

Will be starting with a MM in Silicon Valley in July covering tech and clean tech. The bank is not a well established player in space, but have done some impressive mm deals in other industries. Long term goal is to get in VC, preferrably Growth, in Greater China Area, (I grew up in China and am fluent in Mandarin). Went to a non-target small liberal arts. Thoughts?

work at the MM and then lateral to Hong Kong offices. then start networking. If networking matters a lot in the US, then networking is crucial in Asia. As long as you know the right people, all the right opportunities will open up.

Thanks ibhopeful. Do you think the route 2 yr MM -> VC in US -> VC in China makes sense at all? Or the you think the track you suggest makes more sense?

If you already have a network in Asia, and are totally fluent, then ib hopeful's advice is sound. If you're trying to break into Asia cold though, I think you might have better luck trying to get into a VC firm here with lots of exposure to Asia and try to get in that way. One step at a time though, this path will definitely be difficult

note that US (any) experience is almost irrelevant for China VC at this point. The China VC industry is getting very localized and dependent on local networks. this means that its almost impossible to do anything in the US and jump directly to China into VC. You will have to have worked in China extensively to get into VC there.

Your best bet is to leverage US banking into China banking (transferable technical skills) and network like crazy while you're there.
