Career switch from Corporate VC to Management Consulting in Europe

TL;DR: Starting ESCP MiM as a dual-degree student, but recruiting happens before I'll have grades from the program. Undergrad GPA is below typical targets (~7.5/10) from Latin America. I have almost two years of CVC / corporate strategy experience at a stock exchange / financial market infrastructure group, including ~11 months full-time where I was effectively running much of the fund's day-to-day execution under the Managing Partner. Native Spanish, C1 English, Spanish citizenship (no visa issues in Europe). Targeting Spain, English-speaking Europe and possibly the Middle East. Is MBB / Tier 2 screening realistic despite the GPA, or should I mainly focus on Tier 2 / Big 4 strategy / deals / corporate finance?

Hi everyone!

I'm trying to get a realistic take on whether I can pass CV screening for MBB / Tier 2 consulting in Europe or alternatively, the Middle East.

I'm starting the MiM at ESCP Business School as a dual-degree student, so I'll only spend one academic year there instead of the usual two. This also means I'll be applying for consulting roles before I have any real grades from the program. My undergrad GPA is below typical targets, around 7.5/10, from a top private university in Latin America. I know "top university in Latin America" doesn't mean anything in Europe, which is exactly why I'm worried, haha.

I'm pretty flexible on location. Spain is the obvious one because I'm a native Spanish speaker, but I'm also open to any English-speaking office in Europe or the Middle East. I'll also be doing my specialization semester in Madrid (between January and May), which should make it easier to build connections with the local office.

Quick profile:

  • Undergrad in business/technology, graduated in 2025
  • Spanish citizenship (no visa issues anywhere in Europe)
  • Native Spanish, C1 English
  • Teaching Assistant for Corporate Finance
  • Merit-based scholarship during undergrad
  • Thesis on SME financing / tokenization, graded 10/10

Experience-wise, I have almost two years in corporate venture capital / corporate strategy at a financial market infrastructure group, basically a smaller LatAm version of a Deutsche Börse / SIX / LSEG / Nasdaq / BME type of company, not a bank or traditional asset manager.

I started as a CVC intern for about a year while studying, then stayed full-time for another ~11 months. In the full-time role, I took on full ownership of the CVC's day-to-day execution working directly under the Managing Partner: pipeline management, founder meetings, startup screening, due diligence, investment memos, market sizing, IC materials, portfolio tracking and connecting portfolio companies with internal business units. Beyond the investment side, I also worked on corporate strategy projects, including business cases, market analysis and evaluating how new initiatives fit into the company's longer-term objectives.

Not sure if this is relevant, but when I applied to MBB in my home country with an even lower GPA (while still studying), I got invited to McKinsey Solve, Bain Gorilla and BCG's online assessment. I didn't continue for personal reasons, so I'm not sure whether that counts as passing screening or just clearing the first filter.

So my questions are:

  1. Is this profile good enough to realistically get interviews at MBB / Tier 2 in Europe or the Middle East, or is the undergrad GPA likely to kill me at screening?
  2. Besides Spain and the Middle East, are there any English-speaking European offices worth targeting? I was thinking Ireland, maybe the Nordics, Brussels or Amsterdam, but I'm not sure how realistic those are without the local language or whether some of those offices are just too small. Maybe applying back in my home country? The offices are not big, around 3-4 AC per cycle iirc
  3. Given the GPA, does it make more sense to focus on Tier 2 firms like OW, LEK, Kearney or Roland Berger as the primary targets rather than MBB, or is it worth running both tracks in parallel?

I'm just trying to figure out if a serious MBB recruiting push makes sense, or if I should mainly focus on Tier 2 / Big 4 strategy / deals / corporate finance roles.

Thanks a lot!!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's a breakdown of your situation and advice:

1. MBB/Tier 2 Screening Feasibility

  • Undergrad GPA: While your GPA (~7.5/10) is below typical targets, it’s not necessarily a dealbreaker. MBB and Tier 2 firms in Europe and the Middle East often take a holistic view of candidates, especially if you bring unique strengths like your CVC experience and Spanish citizenship (which is advantageous for Spain-based roles).
  • Experience: Your nearly two years of corporate venture capital and strategy experience, particularly the high level of responsibility you’ve had, is a strong differentiator. The fact that you’ve effectively run day-to-day execution under a Managing Partner is impressive and aligns well with consulting skill sets.
  • Language Skills: Native Spanish and C1 English proficiency are assets, especially for Spain and English-speaking offices in Europe or the Middle East.
  • Previous MBB Screening: Being invited to McKinsey Solve, Bain Gorilla, and BCG’s online assessment in your home country suggests your profile has potential to pass initial screening, even with a lower GPA.

2. Targeting Locations

  • Spain: This is your strongest target market due to your Spanish citizenship, language skills, and planned specialization semester in Madrid. Networking with local offices during this time will be crucial.
  • English-Speaking Europe: Ireland, Amsterdam, and Brussels are realistic options, as these offices often hire non-native speakers. However, the Nordics may be more challenging without local language skills.
  • Middle East: This region is a viable option, as firms here are generally more open to international candidates with diverse backgrounds. Your CVC experience and Spanish citizenship could stand out in this market.
  • Home Country: Applying back home could be a fallback option, but given your international aspirations and the smaller size of local offices, it may not align with your goals.

3. MBB vs. Tier 2 Focus

  • MBB: It’s worth pursuing MBB, especially in Spain and the Middle East, where your profile may resonate. However, be prepared for the GPA to be a potential hurdle, and ensure your application highlights your professional accomplishments and unique experiences.
  • Tier 2: Firms like Oliver Wyman, LEK, Kearney, and Roland Berger should be primary targets. These firms often have slightly more flexible GPA requirements and value strong professional experience. Additionally, Big 4 strategy and deals teams (e.g., Deloitte S&O, EY-Parthenon) are excellent options.
  • Parallel Approach: Running both tracks in parallel is a smart strategy. Apply broadly to maximize your chances, but tailor your applications to highlight your strengths (e.g., leadership in CVC, international perspective, and language skills).

4. Actionable Steps

  • Networking: Leverage your time in Madrid to build connections with consulting professionals, especially at MBB and Tier 2 firms. Attend events, reach out to alumni, and schedule informational interviews.
  • Application Strategy: Craft a compelling narrative that emphasizes your professional achievements, leadership in CVC, and international perspective. Downplay the GPA by focusing on your merit-based scholarship, thesis, and teaching assistant role.
  • Case Prep: Start preparing for case interviews early. Strong performance in interviews can offset concerns about your GPA.
  • Target Firms: Prioritize Spain, the Middle East, and English-speaking European offices. Apply to both MBB and Tier 2 firms, but focus more heavily on Tier 2 and Big 4 strategy/deals roles as a realistic path.

5. Final Thoughts

Your profile has strong elements that can appeal to consulting firms, particularly in Spain and the Middle East. While the GPA may pose a challenge, your unique experience and international background can help you stand out. A dual-track approach targeting both MBB and Tier 2 firms, combined with strategic networking and strong case prep, will give you the best shot at breaking into consulting.
