how is anything a joke to wharton and harvard unless you're on the street cleaning team. you'll be a competitive candidate with 700 GMT and 3.6-7 with good reason to go to bschool

Nowdays IA (internal audit) is really hot only because of SOX 404 Complaince. It's considered to be a good thing. And yes Bcorp is correct as well.

Examine the IA position and role within the company very carefully. I know it sounds basic, but IA varies a TON between companies. I had a lot of IA interviews when I was leaving big 4. In 4 years (probably close to B school time) would you still be in IA? What role? Many companies consider IA a rotation and then you move out. You need to know your options.

Also, I hope you've talked to the IA manager/director. Did they seem pretty sharp? Some IA departments are a complete joke and waste of space, some are very good - I think management may be a good indication of the competency of the dept.

Another thing I would personally ask about is travel. Not only where, but how do you travel? I know of some HUGE well known companies where IA traveled a ton, but super low budget. Some could only go home every other weekend (and the weekend they had to stay on the road, they weren't really given any spending allowance). Seriously, some companies that seem like amazing companies treat the IA like shit.

IA is not all negative though. These are just warnings. Many IA will be a great experience and often prepare you for a management role.

I think B Schools will look at your individual experience, so its hard to say if IA is good or bad in a B schools eyes. It can be a great way to be involved in all aspects of great companies.

Very well said!!! I did an IA internship with the biggest marketing and media company and i had the best experience. I dont' think i'll ever go to the big 4 after having worked for them.
