good question
Fellow ENG here--definitely possible. Take a look at Sequoia, too. Just need to learn about the industry on your own and network a ton and you'll have a shot
what did your path look like? how would compare the long, somewhat dull hours (yet fixed and routine) of engineering to PE?
Will be entering IB (graduating soon) and looking to transition to PE after an IB analyst stint. Haven't worked in the ENG industry but I've had plenty of dullness in finance, but also plenty that I've enjoyed.
For me, the career choice was centered around the upper comp limit in lots of ENG jobs--a corporate VP/COO is pretty limited in their upside, whereas the best PE partners' upsides are nearly limitless thanks to carry. Plus I've always enjoyed living and working in large cities
can you give some more insight on how to break in?
Are you an engineering consultant or undergrad studying engineering?
engineer in industry
It is certainly possible if you go from ME --> IB/MBB --> PE. I studied mechanical/aerospace engineering, went through MBB consulting to an UMM/MF PE shop.
is the pay at the PE shop worth it?
1st year comp is probably higher than anything I would be able to get in 8-10 years in ME.
