How to approach HH Calls if not planning on doing On Cycle

Been getting a lot of inbound from head hunters “checking in” after on cycle. How do folks usually handle those calls? Any tips for what to ask/say, especially if you’re planning on pursuing off cycle opportunities?

Also, do HH ever communicate to your current firm that you are recruiting?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some tips on how to handle headhunter (HH) calls if you're not planning on doing on-cycle recruiting and are instead pursuing off-cycle opportunities:

Handling HH Calls:

  1. Be Honest but Vague:

    • You can mention that you are exploring opportunities but avoid specifying that you are only interested in off-cycle roles. This keeps the HH engaged without giving away too much.
    • Example: "I'm currently exploring various opportunities and will let you know if I get close to an offer. Please don't send my resume anywhere else for the time being."
  2. Express Interest in Specific Firms:

    • If you have particular firms in mind, express your interest in those firms to the HH. This helps them understand your preferences and tailor their search accordingly.
    • Example: "I'm particularly interested in firms like Bain Capital or Hellman and Friedman. Could you keep an eye out for opportunities there?"
  3. Ask About Off-Cycle Opportunities:

    • Directly inquire about off-cycle opportunities and the firms that typically hire off-cycle. This shows your interest and helps the HH understand your timeline.
    • Example: "Are there any firms that you know of which typically hire off-cycle? I'm interested in exploring those opportunities."
  4. Networking:

    • Use these calls as a networking opportunity. Build a relationship with the HH so they keep you in mind for future opportunities.
    • Example: "I appreciate you checking in. Let's stay in touch, and I'll keep you updated on my availability."

Questions to Ask:

  • "What firms are currently looking for candidates off-cycle?"
  • "Can you provide insights into the interview process for off-cycle roles?"
  • "Are there any specific skills or experiences that firms are looking for in off-cycle candidates?"
  • "How can I best position myself for off-cycle opportunities?"

Do HHs Communicate to Your Current Firm?

  • Generally, No:
    • Headhunters typically do not communicate with your current firm that you are recruiting. Their goal is to place you in a new role and earn their commission, so they have no incentive to jeopardize your current position.
    • However, it's always wise to be cautious and maintain confidentiality about your job search.

By following these tips and asking the right questions, you can effectively manage your interactions with headhunters and position yourself well for off-cycle opportunities.
