Dog lovers
I love dogs abs they make me constantly happy. I got a Covid dog with my girlfriend but he stays at her parents house. Moving into a new place in August and really want to get another dog but worried that I won’t be able to see it during my 2023 IB internship and then when I start full time.
To the fellow dog lovers here: what kind of dog is your best furry friend and how do you manage to have/enjoy time with/ take care of them while working a lot?
If you truly love dogs, you won’t get one while working in banking. I work a 9-5 (give or take) and would feel bad about owning a dog. A dog should be an extension of your family. Would you let a nanny spend all day with your child? Some would, and those are people I fundamentally disagree with.
My brother has a dog, and my parents drive 4 hours a day like twice a week to pick it up and bring it to their house because he’s busy. It works because they have the time.
If you are unable to spend constant time with the dog, do not get it. A dog deserves more than you paying someone to walk it twice a day.
Literally you could volunteer at animal shelters and get a lot of the same interaction rather than getting a dog and being a bad owner. I could never fathom getting a dog 1. while working IB and 2. while living in an apartment.
I see so many people getting dogs where I live but their apartments are small, and these are big dogs too. To me that's just inhumane to act like that, what kind of existence is that for the dog
.
You will not have time to properly care for a dog. If you really want to live with a dog, I'd just try to find a roommate who already has a dog and is responsible for it. That way, you can play with it when you want, but don't have any obligation to take care of it during the limited free time you will have
Only get a dog if your family is willing to pay for it to go to doggy day care all day. Most dogs have fun at doggy day care. It is sort of like sending your kid to a school that just has recess.
The idea of having a dog as an analyst is nuts to me. Not fair to the dog IMO. I am a PE principal in a non-NYC city and just got a dog last year. Yellow lab, absolute legend, but a LOT of energy as she’s a working dog and is built to be out in the field flushing birds. I work 40hrs/week in office plus probably another 20-25/week working remotely and it’s barely manageable. Take the hound out in the morning and 2x in evening (after I get home then again before bed) plus we have a dog walker that comes 2x during the day to give the pup her exercise. Wrecked my morning workout routine and dog walkers are expensive but she’s (the dog) hands down worth it. Best friends, etc.
Bottom line: I wouldn’t recommend getting a dog as an analyst if you’re in a city like NYC and/or working all the time. Unfair to everyone involved.
How much do you make and how many shoes do you own
Don’t do it until you have control over your schedule and the money to spend on either day care or walker(s). Also consider the additional costs that are involved — it’s not just food and treats. It’s the daycare/walks, grooming, vet visits, and pet sitters. Unless you have friends or family who’s willing to watch the dog, you can’t just as easily take off for a weekend trip or stay overnight somewhere. They’re a lot of responsibility, which is fine when you’re in the right spot in your life. Just def not as an IB analyst. Maybe just like…volunteer at a shelter or be a dog sitter once in a while.
