List of all long/short funds

I'm a 3rd year IB analyst looking to recruit for a l/s fund. Can you please share the best way to find a comprehensive list of all fundamental l/s funds globally? I've been manually compiling one but was hoping to find out if there's a more efficient way to do it or if someone already has one and is happy to share it. Thank you

Based on the WSO Dataset, finding a comprehensive list of all fundamental long/short funds globally can be quite a challenge due to the sheer number and diversity of funds. However, there are several strategies you can employ to streamline your search:

  1. Industry Publications and Rankings: Publications like Barron's often release annual rankings and lists of top-performing hedge funds, including long/short funds. The 2015 edition of the Barron’s Best 100 Hedge Funds list, for example, is a good starting point.

  2. Financial Data Services: Platforms like Bloomberg, Morningstar, and Thomson Reuters offer tools to filter and identify hedge funds based on strategy, including long/short. These platforms often require a subscription but are invaluable for deep financial research.

  3. Networking: Engage with professionals in the industry through forums like Wall Street Oasis, LinkedIn, or industry conferences. Sometimes, the best resources come from personal connections who can provide insights or share lists they have compiled.

  4. Hedge Fund Databases: There are several databases like Hedge Fund Research (HFR), Preqin, and HedgeCo that provide detailed information on a multitude of funds, including strategy specifics. These databases often require a subscription.

  5. Regulatory Filings and Websites: Many hedge funds are required to file with regulatory bodies like the SEC. These filings can sometimes provide information on the fund’s strategy. Additionally, exploring the websites of hedge funds can offer insights into their investment strategies, though as you noted, they can sometimes be vague.

While these methods may not instantly provide a complete list, they can significantly aid in building a comprehensive database of long/short funds. Remember, persistence and thorough research are key in the finance industry.
