fund manager Rude AF
So I’m interning for this small investment team that handles large capitals of a high net worth family. Everyone on the team was either in investment banking, private equity, or hedge fund of big names for years. I am the first intern and the only one.
Long story short, I really appreciate my manager who brought me on board. However, they recently hired this new manager who is extremely stuck-up. He is an absolute snob who treated me like I am a schmuck. I mean. I understand that I am an intern and 100% aware that I am not as important as everyone else on the team. But the way he talks to me and the attitude he gave me really hurt my self-esteem. Also, some small things he did show absolutely no respect for me as a person.
Everyone else on the team is all super nice and sweet. They are busy of course but they don’t treat me like how he does. On the other hand, he doesn’t just treat me like this. He is also very intense to another new investment manager who spent some years in a BB. He interrupted and corrected the other manager multiple times during a meeting. Also, he spent about 15 -20 minutes introducing his glorious background and experiences and often speak in a way that comes across as shows off his knowledge lol
I wonder if anyone could tell me that are people who are high up in the finance industry generally like that? Or he is an exception? how to deal with this type of jerks that make you feel small? Thanks! Probably a lot of typos and grammar mistakes. I apologize in advance!
You're going to deal with assholes 10x more in this industry than any other. If that is something that is going to bother you in the long-run or hinder your performance on the team then you may want to look into some other field.
any advice on how to deal with people like that?
Simply put, get over it. All seriousness, push it to the back of your mind and move forward.
I know it isn't easy.
Best strategy I ever learned for dealing with higher-up A-holes: do really good work for the other people so that you end up working with them more than him.
A lot of high performers don't like beating around the bush and simply critique quickly. Sometimes people who aren't used to it get butthurt but he's probably not being malicious...
You are right. He is probably just being himself. I talked to another manager from a different team. He agrees with me on that this person doesn't assimilate with the rest of the team. and he is all about himself
I'm not accusing you of this but make sure not to talk badly in any way about someone higher up the totem pole than you. Shit rolls downhill and, as an intern, you're at the bottom.
In regards to you asking about how to deal with people like this, just keep your head down around them and do what they ask the correct way the first time. If you give them no reason to complain about you and they're still being an asshole then you know you don't want to work for that person or in that group so that will give you guidance for future decisions regarding where you want to be (with both firm and group). Best of luck with the situation.
I'm an intern too and luckily I haven't encountered anyone like your fund manager. In fact, one MD at my firm is extremely nice to interns. Take interns out for lunch at a restaurant once a week. But people at my firm have tons of stories (during lunch break & coffee chat) about some narcissistic guys at other places glorify their presumed transcendent brain power. So yeah, people like your manager (accomplished but arrogant af) do exist in the industry.
devil wears prada part 2
Just a quick aside about rude fund managers: When I was looking to recruit, I emailed a partner at an asset manager going downhill asking if he'd be open to connecting over the phone.
His response: "Yeah, I don't 'connect'"
Another fund manager I emailed that was twice his size and a hell of a lot more successful in terms of returns said "I'm happy to connect. When are you free?"
You're going to come across some jerk-offs who think they're God's gift to mankind despite their shit performance, and some of the nicest guys at top shops who are happy to help out junior guys. It's just a fact of life.
little late to the game here, but yea I agree ppl like these are just prevalent in the finance industry. perhaps smth abt the $ makes some ppl think they can be a top-grade A-hole who treats ppl in appalling ways. I’m totally fine when a manager corrects someone for their work mistakes but I’ve seen managers who go all personal and I understand how that can hurt self esteem. But yea only the strong survive, and you have to stand strong, don’t let it hurt you, grow a tough skin, learn from other mentors, and let it bounce off. karma bites the deserving ones in the end ;p
anw so about practical solutions, if you’re reporting to multiple bosses (with him being one of them), try to prioritize the work of the boss you like better, do a rly good job, get chosen for more work under him/her so you don’t have to report so much to the rude boss. if the rude boss asks you to do more work, say you’re already very occupied w the other boss’s work (even better if the other boss is of a higher rank!!).
avoid him if you think he’s unreasonably rude all the time, keep your distance, don’t appear too “free” around him. grow strong alliances with other colleagues, build a strong rapport w both seniors and juniors, have a go-to group of friends who stand by you, but don’t bad mouth him as you report directly to him.
if you work for a company that values a good culture, typically bosses above can see which manager runs a better team and is more well-liked and accepted by juniors/others. ive known superiors who were true d*cks, had their moments of glory, but were eventually got tossed to a more dead-end role cos srsly no one really liked them and no one believed they could rly build the firm up in a more senior role.
keep your chin up!!! good exp nonetheless. Cheerios! all the best ! ~~
