Assistant Trader Intern
General Interview Information
Interview Details
I would say that the interview process was very laid-back. I was about 10 minutes late for I was sick in bed during that day and they were very forgiving with it and did not mind at all. Also the interviewer was wearing a T-shirt of the firm and a pair of jeans, quite different from anything I've had before.
The interview consists of mainly probability questions, which was to be expected. I was also asked a couple questions on my past experiences on my resume -- some experiences that they thought were interesting but I, unfortunately was not prepared for and did not answer too well.
The math part of the interview starts with four arithmetic questions with moderate difficulty. Any quantitive-oriented person should be able to answer with ease although the pressure could be an issue. Then followed the probability questions, they were of fairly high difficulty and the interviewer seemed to have expected it, as he would give a hint or two when I got stuck. However, it becomes less likely that the interviewee would advance to the later rounds as more hints are given. I was able to solve two probability questions even though there are four of them in total. This is in fact not a terrible performance compared my peers who also interviewed there, but isn't enough for me to get a second-rounder.
I would recommend future interviewees to search for Jane Street questions on the Internet and attempt to solve all the ones you can find, as there are rumors that says they recycle the interview questions for the first three rounds of interview. I personally did not hear about it until after the interview so I had no way to verify it. But doing old interview questions can never hurt.
