Good Gyms in Midtown

I start work in July and I am looking for decent 24 hour gyms around midtown.Having a pool at the gym is a plus although not necessary. I have heard good stuff about equinox but they are not really 24 hours. It would be great if you all could point me to a few places. Thanks in advance.

Would your opinion of NYSC be the same as those reviews? I'm looking at 51st & Lexington location

The gym here is fine -- I'd been in here a few times and remember it having the things I need, but I think it was separated on two floors which was sort of annoying and it gets crowded quickly. I don't think it's as bad as what some of the yelp reviews say but again, you really shouldn't sign up for a gym until you've seen it in person.

i go to equinox, but the best advice i can give you about choosing a gym is that you should pick one that's very close to either your office or home, whichever is more important. even if you're a total gym rat, you won't have much time to go to the gym, and when you do, you want to be able to hit it up and get as much time in there as you can rather than worrying about your commute. overall i agree with mlamb93.

in general i liked the mix of people and the atmosphere the best. hard for me to get motivated at a gym if i don't really like the vibe and if it's not the right setting. i don't really go to the gym to socialize much, but the staff was quite helpful there and i didn't think there was that much of an air of pretense which you can definitely run into at various midtown venues. the hours worked for my schedule and it was just a couple blocks from my office. best thing to do is just to go check it out and see if you like it...i think usually they give you like a 3-day or 1-week trial period and stuff so at least you have a few days worth of free gym membership.

hope that helps

honestly the only way you can consistently make it to the gym is to go in the morning. it sucks, but if you can leave by midnight (pretty reasonable in this market) yuo should be able to make it

the nicest gym (with the best talent) in midtown (and probly nyc) is SCLA at 61st street

I'm one of those people that can't make due with your average hotel or apartment gym, but some of the things I don't need are 40 inch plasmas above every treadmill, oak paneled locker rooms, etc. Equinox is an extremely nice gym but the initiation and monthly fee is pretty outrageous, even for New York.

NYSC does the job if you can avoid showering there. The equipment is fine, but the bathrooms are pretty horrendous. Unfortunately, I usually worked out at the NYSC by my office, so I showered there on a regular basis. I just tried not to touch the walls or the shower curtain, and I'm not a big germophobe, either. But it's still wasn't bad enough for me to warrant joining Equinox. I mean, in the end, at Equinox all you're paying for is a really nice locker room.

personally i go to the gym to lift and not to socialize/get a massage/hang out in the steam room. NYSC has all the equipment you need but is not a "spa" like equinox. decide what you want in a gym and if the extra $ is worth it. i also like that NYSC has gyms every few blocks in the city so you can always work out with friends or whatever and there is always a gym open on major holidays (i worked out christmas day/new years day) for example.

I like New York Health and Racquet. Decent number of locations, nicer than NYSC but not fancy or pretentious, and cheapest price I found (through company program).

NYSC would probably be fine for most people. Overall Equinox is a nicer gym, and the cleanliness was important to me. But I should add that the biggest factor for me to choose Equinox over NYSC is primarily because it closes two hours later than the nearest NYSC on both weekdays and weekends. I think Equinox cost me an extra $35 per month over NYSC, but it was well worth it since a lot of evenings I ended up going to the gym at Equinox at a time when the nearest NYSC would have been closed.

When it comes down to it, I think what should matter most is (1) hours and (2) proximity. Equinox was better for me on both fronts, and things like atmosphere, cleanliness, and quality of staff were extra things that I took into account in order to justify paying more per month for the gym. But if anyone's concerned about the equipment, I don't think Equinox has materially more equipment than the NYSC's I've been to.

harvard club, yale club, penn club, cornell club

these are all in midtown and will offer gym access (summer membership) for the same price as a real gym, with superior facilities and nice perks like recent grad night thursdays at the yale club.

catch is that you have to go to an affiliated college, but best value for the money.
