Infra PE -> MBA -> VC?
Did 1 year in TMT at a MM IB (think HL/JEFF/PJ), then moved to a Tier 2 place for 1.5yrs (think NOM/RBC/HSBC) to do Power, Utils & Infra and now have an offer at an Infra PE fund.
Fund is about $5bn AUM (so not big), but deal flow is very high (quite possibly highest in the infra PE space) so name is fairly well known in infra.
Plan is to do 2/3 years there and take a punt at top tier MBA (H/S/W), and hopefully land a VC gig.
Does that sound like a plausible plan? Naturally I expect my lack of TMT experience to be a negative relative to people who did TMT in IB, but is VC still attainable?
Are you interested in cleantech or the more typical tech VC? Because I would think a transition to a cleantech fund or group would make a lot of sense if you have done some renewable investments / advisory. On the other hand, joining a typical VCs post-MBA will be significantly harder given you have limited tech experience and it's such a sough after jobs (ie. there are tons of candidate with tech IB / PE background or APM / PM from Google, FB, etc and they all have a significantly leg up over you).
Thanks for responding.
Would prefer typical tech VC and that's been my focus so far. Have done renewables at current bank, and will be doing renewables at the fund too, but havent really done much research into cleantech VC thus far - do you know if there are a lot of funds doing this?
yeah, don't really see the fit from infra to VC. VC firms look for people with entrepreneurial experience, product management experience or software investing experience. seems like a very tough uphill battle for someone with your experience.
