How does interviewing ACTUALLY work?

For the megafunds and BBs like Blackstone, GS, etc., how do they handle the first round process for summer analysts? I've received first rounds for BX RE debt but my friend received a first round for BX RE acquisitions. Am I already dinged for acquisitions? Are they dinged for debt? Are we put into cohorts or something? Maybe after their RE Acquisitions superday, I'll receive my first round for RE Acquisitions? It's funny cuz my resume is tailored for RE acquisitions and they have significant RE debt experience.Would love some clarity from people at big firms on how the recruiting process works in this regard.
