What uncommon items do you recommend for making your personal office space ideal?

Standing desk is a game changer. I would refuse a job offer that would require I work in-office and not provide a standing desk.

Candles - I’ll light one when working late at night and put some vaporwave music on, and this is easily when I’m most productive (majority of my job is excel monkey work). The light flickering on the walls is soothing. Reminds me of watching the ocean from a high balcony as it’s a moving visual that’s never exactly the same. There’s a reason people play millions to live on the beach.

Drink Coaster - I have a nice leather set I got from a vendor at my old job.

6ft charging cable - mine might be even longer. Great flexibility to have my phone in different positions.

Open window - I love being able to open the window behind my desk and have the cool night breeze come in. Keeps the candle from not becoming overpowering.

Items I’d like to add include a keyboard with lights. I can’t see my keyboard at night as I dim tf outta my monitors. Might spend the money myself to get a nice one.

Also want a mouse with the front / back side buttons. My personal mouse has it, but I use my work keyboard / mouse combo which don’t have it. It’s a nice work one, but could be better.

I also really enjoy my google home. I ask it the weather when I wake up and I ask it to put reminders on my calendar. it's like having an assistant.

I don't have google home, but I have a smart home and have to say the thermostat control on the iPhone is game changing. I'm very particular about temperature and adjust it slightly and it works perfectly.

Call me oldsschool, but my desk is the snack stop. I go out of the way to buy snacks and keep them on my desk for everyone. For F&F above, so many times I've had podcasts and tv mess with my Alexa, so it's almost more of a liability than an asset sometimes.

I'm a super audiophile and have a big desk with large Bose bookshelf speakers with old school wiring and a Sony receiver. No speaker sounds as good as these Bose speakers. I have a little iPod and play Pandora on them, it's great. I've had these speakers for 14 years.

You just totally contradicted yourself bud. Bose is trash. Run some Paradigms or Regas with either a Rega or NAD amp. Mcintosh amp would be the ultimate.

Two things have helped me tremendously

  1. Mac. I really don't like working in Windows any more. I grew up on Windows, made a lot of money writing in .NET and all that, but I made the switch about 10 years ago and haven't looked back. Won't work for a company that doesn't offer a Mac option.
  2. 34" monitor at home. I know these are becoming more common in offices, but I bought one for home last year and it has been a game changer. I can run two full virtual machines, side-by-side and it is awesome!

I've only every used Windows and I've been strongly opposed to Mac.

I always thought with Excel and Finance especially, Windows had been more common. What made you change your perspective and side with Mac?

What are some of the features you find most enjoyable/beneficial?

Not sure if these are "uncommon", but I just got my own office a couple of months ago, so I figured I'd share. For context, our office is a modern renovation inside a very old building, so lots of exposed brick, high exposed ceilings w/ black MEP showing & all that stuff. It's a vibe.

However, my office felt a little sterile. White drywall, floor-to-ceiling windows, and it just felt kind of dead. Think of the new Axe Capital office in Billions S3-5. It's a great modern space, but it feels a little cold.

My biggest recommendation is to get a plant. I have a 6' tall Birds of Paradise that sits in the corner, and it makes me so happy to look at. It's a beautiful green color that cuts in through all the white, and really makes the space feel a little cozier. I have a couple of prints from Virginia Garcia Costa - look her up, she's an Argentinian artist who specializes in geometric pieces with natural elements. Very cool stuff.

For tech, my recommendations are an extended mousepad - I have an 11x35" Belkin pad that my keyboard and mouse sit on, and it works great, aesthetically and practically. The former guy in my office got sleek C&B electronic shades that are hardwired into the space, so if you can get anything like that it's great. It's controlled from a touchscreen USB hub on my desk, and closing them without getting up is a game changer.

I don't quite have the space for more than a couple of chairs, but I wish that I could kind of get a lounge space w/ a couch and a table set up. I'll take what I have for now though, I'd say my current office is around 10x11'. Any other recommendations feel free to let me know.

Edit: I just saw that you meant your personal office space, so my apologies. I'd be happy to share those as well, but a lot of what I said above applies.

I love my home office, it includes:

  • standalone dual monitor arms connecting two 1440p 165hz IPS monitors
  • quality microphone (at least a Yeti Nano or better) and webcam (1080p 60fps or better)
  • high DPI wired (or wireless mouse) with large mousepad mat
  • Mechanical keyboard
  • Wireless phone and watch chargers
Be excellent to each other, and party on, dudes.

This guy gets it. All I'd add is a third monitor, all at least 27". Unless you have to use your laptop as the third of course. And good cue on the IPS. You spend all day looking at a monitor, make it worthwhile. Steelseries mousepad, something as competent as Logitech K845 or Das since you're also using that keyboard all day too.

I am a tech person, and I experimented with many gadgets and tech to make my workspace ideal for a 12hr a day programming. Here is what I settled on to make it a special for my needs:

  1. Sit-stand desk. Not sitting only and not standing at all times. I switch between sitting and standing and do all my meetings standing. Helps with grounding and focus.
  2. 49" wide 120 refresh rate monitor. I like every app I frequently need to be on one screen.  I organise apps on the desktop with the help of the Magnet app on the macOS app store,
  3. My beloved Logitech MX Master 3 mouse. Never found any other mouse that beats it for ergonomic and productivity features.
  4. Can't see myself switching from the Moonlander keyboard soon. It is a full programmable split keyboard that saves my wrist from flaring up and boosts my productivity.
  5. Caldigits Docking Station 3 Plus for organising all the ugly wires that come with every device I use.
  6. Blue Yeti X desk microphone + Logitech Speakers, as I hate to have my headset at the top of my ears all day for meetings. Have to be working from home, though, to make this works.
  7. Not all will need this, but I use a KVM device to switch between my personal and work Macbook without having to disconnect and reconnects all my devices and monotrs and reconnect them. Just a press of a button and I switch all monitor, mouse, speakers, mic, keyboard, camera to another device.
  8. Logitech Webcam.
  9. Manual calendar to realise that today isn't like yesterday.
  10. Self-watering plant.
  11. Coffee machine to keep me happy.
  12. Wall frames to remind me of what I am passionate about.

Here are some photos I took of my workspace a few months ago.
