It would be interesting to be able to buy shares in individual teams and watch them go up and down according to performance and playoffs, etc. Similar to sports betting, but looking at the overall season instead of single games & point spreads.

Not a joke. I know its far fetched, but if a team for example couldnt get sold to 1 person or very few people, maybe taking a team public would work. These are $ billion+ teams. Or NFL could go public and really spend some cash in europe/south america.
I don't know how familiar people were with the proposition, but Bain Cap put together a bid for the NHL a couple years back (though it was rejected). The idea was very straight-forward; the league would be more profitable if teams cooperated to maximize revenue from games. In addition, strict salary caps could help control player "unions", leading to a much more profitable enterprise. Out of all professional sports, the NFL definitely has the closest model to what Bain Cap had envisioned.
