Looking for Roommates in NYC

Recently got an offer I can’t pass up with a tech startup and will be switching from IB. It’s pretty late in the year already and am just starting to look for living arrangements in NYC (previous role was in Chicago) so am looking for any advice to find some recent college grads as roommates.

Budget is up to $2k / month and I prefer to live in East Village or Murray Hill, but if the circumstances are right will move elsewhere.

If you are looking for a roommate or know any good resources to find some people in similar situations I’d appreciate it if you could leave a comment on this post to help me out.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some strategies to find roommates in NYC, especially if you're targeting areas like East Village or Murray Hill:

  1. Utilize Online Platforms: Websites like Craigslist, Roomi, and SpareRoom are popular for finding roommates. These platforms allow you to filter searches by neighborhood and budget, which can help you find someone with similar living preferences.

  2. Social Media and Forums: Leverage social media platforms like Facebook, where there are groups dedicated to apartment searches in NYC. LinkedIn can also be useful for connecting with professionals who might be in a similar situation.

  3. Networking through Your New Company: Since you're joining a tech startup, check if there are internal message boards, Slack channels, or social groups where you can post about your search. Often, new hires or existing employees might also be looking for roommates.

  4. Local Community Boards: Physical community boards in coffee shops or community centers in East Village or Murray Hill might have postings about roommate searches.

  5. Word of Mouth: Don’t underestimate the power of networking. Mention your search to friends, family, and acquaintances. Sometimes the best connections come through personal referrals.

Remember, when searching for roommates, it’s important to discuss your living habits, expectations about cleanliness, guest policies, and other lifestyle preferences to ensure a good match. Good luck with your move to NYC!
