Haven’t started full time yet but looking to get an M2 at some point. I’ll be in a T2 city, so makes a bit more sense. Curious to hear other people’s thoughts/experiences with sports cars during an analyst stint - It’s definitely not the most financially sound thing to do, so how do you all go about justifying paying 800-1000 / month? Even as a car enthusiast, I scratch my head and wonder if it’s worth offsetting the purchase until higher comp or just YOLOing it while I’m young. Thoughts?

I bought an F80 M3 as a second year analyst in a T1 city. I justified it by considering how cars have been the main thing motivating me throughout my entire life and therefore the main reason I even wanted to work in IB in the first place. There's also, in my opinion, a huge difference between owning an M3 at 24 vs at 40, and you also have to consider that our generation won't get to enjoy cars as we know them for our entire lives. It's going to be a while before ICE cars are outlawed, but great new cars are already on the way out and will effectively be dead aside from super low volume exotics within the next 2-5 years. (Camaro, Charger / Challenger, R8, GTR, etc. dead as of this year, G87 M2 confirmed last full ICE M car, new C63 AMG is a 4-cyl, etc.)

It also helps that I was going into the purchase thinking that I would likely have to sell the car in around a year and I knew the specific car I was getting would hold value very well (manual, competition, 12k miles). I've had the car about 10 months now and could sell it for what I bought it for. But I also wouldn't mind just holding onto this car forever if life circumstances end up pointing in that direction.

Team Beamer, let’s gooooo

The proper term for BMW cars is actually “Bimmers.” A Beamer is a BMW motorcycle.

My dad has a 1992 E30 vert. Absolutely love his Bimmer. It’s clean af. We got it with just 50K miles a few years back. I drove it to prom and we take it to cars and coffee in McLean when I’m at home. It’s incredibly tight and planted on the road for a 32 year old car.

Personally drive a 1992 Mustang. Never giving it up, but it can’t come to Manhattan so it lives down south for now. It’s straight piped and fun as hell.

I’m trying to convince my dad to pull the trigger on a new M3 at some point, we’ll see.

A car as a junior? Why get a car when you can just walk? Walking is healthier anyways. Even if you worked in a suburban office you should try to walk to work everyday to wake yourself up in the morning and destress in the evening

2023 540i. Looked at m340i, but it’s an entirely different car. My interior is much nicer, but car drives much longer.

Still nimble but nowhere near the older platform 5 series. I drove the new 7 series and that thing is a literal boat, but it’s a boat in the softest ocean you’ve ever been on.

Identify what you want out of your driving experience. I’m a big boy, so the 3 series was too small anyways, especially since I historically have had larger cars.

Also think of your driving style. I love driving fast, and my 540i hits 100+ in the blink of an eye once you’re rolling at 50mph. Great car, especially with the HK sound system. Wish I could’ve gotten the BO but that wasn’t an option on the old gen

Bought an F80 M3 earlier this year and have no regrets. I was lucky enough to purchase from a reputable, local owner who took amazing care of the car, and I got a pretty good deal for it all things considered. I walk to work a several times a week, but my senses light up each and every time I start the car - I've added an exhaust to it with plans on doing an Eventuri intake (I know, I know) and BM3 tune around late spring when I put my summer tires back on the car. It's fantastic to drive sportily and on longer road trips (maybe I've viewing this one with rose tinted glasses since I came from a super stiff, lowered sports car) and a beautiful car to look at and take care of.

I've also been able to look at it through the lens that life is short and if you're going to have a long career, I think pursuing your hobbies/interests with things like this makes the job all the more worth it long-term. I'm incredibly grateful for the car and each day I look at it reminds me of the hard work I've put in over time to be able to comfortably afford it. It was one of the few cars on my "have to own" list when I was in high school and an awesome feeling to be able to actualize it.

I didn’t know anything about BMW growing up besides the fact my uncles had them (and they were rich). I almost pulled the trigger on an M5 when I got my 540i. Would’ve been dope, but you can’t legally use that car how it should be used.

The 540i has solid pickup. Of course performance is nowhere near an M5, but I think the M5 is too much for suburban commuting. Sure, fun on the interstate, but that’s not a daily occurrence. Made more sense to spend half the money and eventually get a nicer car down the road (hopefully by then, money won’t be an option)

Had to double check I didn't write this myself when I saw the first part of this comment since I did the exact same thing last year and bought an F80 M3 after wanting one since high school. I've loved owning my car and it definitely makes me feel like you describe. Part of me wants to keep it forever since it's the perfect spec (manual, comp) and looks / feels brand new inside and out (12k miles at purchase), but since I will likely have to sell whatever car I have in about a year I'm thinking of trading up for a year to try something a step up. You ever thought of what car comes next?

2019 Sunset Orange BMW 330i with M Package and Shadowline, so I’m decked out with the black rims and trim

I leased it but bought it out when the semi shortage was going as I was unwilling to pay a grand for a m340i

You could probably get a pre owned hummer suv for a good bargain

I assume you mean a Hummer H1, as the H2 and H3 are trash.

I have an issue: The military literally added bomb-proof underskirts to this thing but thought this cow-catcher was unneeded.  How many carts are you going to hit in Costco Karen?

(super not a dig at Isiah-he's possibly the coolest dude on here)

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

I bought an F80 M3 in early 2023 as a second year analyst. It's super low mileage (12k at purchase, 17k now) and I only drive it on the weekends, as well as being a very desirable spec (competition package, manual), so resale will be very strong. I had planned on buying an F80 for years at that point, and coming from an E90 330i this car is everything I had ever dreamed of. That said, I'm already thinking of trading up now that I've had the car for close to a year. Love the car, but I plan to move somewhere where I won't be able to really own a car in about a year and part of me wants to try something else before I have to go car-free for a couple years. I should be able to get what I paid back for this car as long as I keep it sub-19k miles. Thinking maybe an AMG GT S or an F90 M5 competition next.

Nice, I don't think you can go wrong with some of the BMWs posted in here. They are much more reliable than they used to be and generally do not run into major issues until ~70k - 80k KM.

They are also a nice mix of fun/practical without turning into a side-job.

There's a reason we don't pop numbers, it kinda freaks the honda fanbois out: https://www.miata.net/himi/

Don’t disagree. First time I test drove 5 series I felt it was small, but I’m used to it. Anyone above 6’ I think would find 3 series way too small.

Personally, I think bmw is only worth it when you’re paying $70k+. 3 series has its place but just not something I like

M cars are awesome. M lite are great too but I feel they are overpriced for what they are

I'm a little over 6'2" and drive an F80 M3 and have tons of extra headroom and track in my seating position (I drive a manual so I do sit a bit closer to the wheel than I would in an auto). I certainly wouldn't be able to sit behind myself though.

The only way I actually feel a bit cramped on the interior is that the seats are too narrow for my lats. I work out 5-6 times a week but am definitely not a massive guy and the seat shape noticeably prevents me from leaning back all the way into the seatback without pushing myself back.

It's a driver's car though, so I'm not really bothered.

I'm more of a Mercedes fan than a BMW fan so might diverge a bit from the rest of this crowd, but I got a GLE 550e when I was promoted to associate - I just like having an SUV and have never seen another one on the road. Also got an AMG GT S when I was promoted to VP (weekend car, I don't drive it to the office).

Both have been great, but I question my sanity every time I pay for a milestone service...

I enjoy Mercedes but feel it’s a step above BMW in that to truly get a Mercedes, you’re spending $100k+. My 5 series brand new was right at 80k

6-Speed S550 Mustang GT, love it. Commute ~20 min to office each day, well worth it and great as a daily. Looking to upgrade to a GT350 or C7 Z06 in a year or two. Had a 6-Speed MK7.5 GTI prior to current car as well, fun to ride around backroads and great daily too.

Love cars. Had a bimmer that became a money pit. Went back to basics and got a 2.0T Accord. Surprisingly good handling for such a basic car. Really want a Civic Type R or an Integra Type S.
