Do recruiters care if people get steak for dinner?
I met up with a friend last night who came into the city for Bear interviews. Apparently they give 40$ for dinner. He got the best steak. I was telling him that maybe it looks bad, but he says it doesnt matter. your thoughts?
They usually pay for your airfare and put you up in a five-star hotel. I don't think they care.
I didn't get offers at every place I had steak at...its definetely a coincidence, just pointing it out. I had Shrimp at Barclays and got an offer 5 hours after my interview.
right... HR tabulates how much each candidate spends and awards offers to those who save the company most money
I wasnt going to say anything.... but now i will. Seriously I am not sure what urks me more, the fact that your posting this in the ibanking forum, or the fact its even being asked at all. Come on people, i know you want to make the right impression but WSO should not tell you what you should be eating and how much!
I am honestly wondering. Sorry it;s in the wrong forum
Trade4size, I disagree. It's normal for newbies to get stressed over minor etiquette details etc. because they can't put it all in perspective. I think one of the good things about this site is they can air out stupid questions about steak, cufflinks etc. and actually get their questions answered so they can focus on important things.
But I agree that he posted in the wrong forum.
Elaine, think of it this way. When you have a 2nd round, the interviewers have 100% say in whether you will get an offer. HR takes care of the expense reports and has 0% say in whether you get the offer. The interviewers will never see your expense reports, thus it has no impact whatsoever.
So true, although it does remind me of an entertaining anecdote that occurred two years ago at a friend's MM bank. The candidate was given his SA offer one day after his superday; several days after having extended the offer, the bank received a copy of his hotel bill. Apparently the kid consumed nearly all of the alcohol in his room's wet bar. A very nervous HR rep proceeded to follow up with the hotel, hoping that there had been some sort of mix-up with his bill; according to the hotel, the bill was 100% accurate and his hotel room had been found literally littered with empty bottles.
Of course, the bank didn't give a shit about the actual bill, but were pretty concerned about the prospect of employing a raging alcoholic (although my personal theory at the time was that the kid had stupidly tried to throw some sort of lame party). In any case, the kid's offer was never rescinded, although folks were pretty relieved when he ended up passing on it.
they put you in places that are like 150/night, not 5-star places like the Peninsula.
There are no 150/night hotels in NYC, try 400/night
I remember a story a while back on WSO someone posted. It went something like,
"I went out to lunch with an MD and I ordered a nice big steak. The MD says, 'Atta boy' and compliments me for my choice."
The point is they don't care about a difference in $10.
not for a bank, but i was interviewing for an MBB consulting firm in the UK and they put me up in a 5 star hotel and took us out to a 2 star michillen restaurant. the HR people told me to "enjoy the hotel", and so i did.
after i accepted my offer, they told me that everyone had a great time at the hotel regardless.
point is: have a good time :)
They won't care if he just expensed it, i.e. ate alone in his hotel room. But when you go out with people as a candidate, you usually follow a rule to follow what everyone else is doing. If everyone else is getting an appy, get one. I wouldn't recommend getting the most expensive thing on the menu either way (or cheapest for that matter). Find a balance.
From an interviewer's perspective, you will look like a toolface if you sit down and order a nice big steak right off the bat on a recruiting dinner. It's one thing if you're already hired, but quite another if you are just craving steak. Save that for closing dinners or group dinners.
Order whatever you want - just make sure that you DON'T eat until everyone else has started eating / gotten their food.
This seems like a weird question. Are you obsessed with steak or something? Besides if they take you to Smith and Wollensky's it's pretty clear that steak is what you're meant to eat.
I honestly never thought about what to order in terms of money - I always worried about messy/drippy/saucy stuff that would look gross eating. But that's just manners I think

Agreed.
