Transferring into IB or PE from industry

Just curious if this is doable and/or easy for people to adapt to. I have 5-7 years experience in the power and utilities industry working as an engineer, manager, corporate finance, and am now working on transactions within the industry. Would this count as relevant experience to be considered for a banking role specific to the sector I have experience in? I have an engineering degree and mba. Just curious if you have worked with people with similar backgrounds and what the challenges were for them and how they adapted.
