I don't know of any giant bodybuilder types in this business. There are a lot of leaner guys who used to be and/or still are competitive runners, rowers, weekend triathletes, etc...some of them lift a few days per week...but they aren't terminator types.

I fit into the latter category. I lift six days a week...but I'm an ex triathlete just trying to fill out my lean frame.

i think it is the hours. to gain size you need strength and rest. its hard to muster up strength when ur contantly tired

about sleep. It's absolutely critical to achieve bulk when lifting. Supposedly 8 hours is key...but I haven't slept 8 straight hours since my days of skipping class in college. I'm sure everyone here feels the same way.

The problem with maintaining your fitness in this profession is two fold. First...lack of adequate sleep. Second...you have to eat to bulk up...but given that we sit at our desks 16 hours a day we are completely vulnerable to a slowing metabolism. It's hard as hell to gain weight/bulk up AND still stay lean.

To get the best of both worlds I actually keep a very low carb diet. Eggs on dry wheat toast for breakfast, light turkey or roast beef sandwiches for lunch and dinner or salads. The idea is to maximize my protein intake...I try to take in 100 grams each day. Breakfast and Lunch are my biggest meals (because I lift in the am). In addition, to keep calaries down I rarely drink anything but water. No sodas. No coffee.

A slow metabolism is good for bulking - sure you'll put on a bit of fat but you have to in order to gain muscle. You will get rid of it in the cut cycle anyway.

Also a low carb diet is bad for bulking; you need carbs (and fat) to build muscle.

If anyone here has problems working out in the am...and is really just interested in cardio as opposed to weight lifting...consider buying a rowing machine. You can buy a new Concept2 for under $900...they're the best on the market...all the colleges use them.

It's easy to store and it's an awesome fullbody workout. Very easy to get on the thing and exhaust yourself for 30 minutes before crashing at night.

I did a bad job of clearly conveying my point. I just meant that I prefer a low carb diet because I would rather stay lean (and feel "well") than set myself up gaining 5-7lbs of fat (and feeling like "shit").

But that's just me...I have a history where I've put on weight and I don't enjoy it. So I do the best I can to build muscle by consuming a lot of protein and by lifting...but when you couple that with my low carb diet and my 3-4 days of rowing...the result is that I'm going to stay pretty lean.

Dan, Were you a Division I athlete, or are you just one of those frustrated guys that lifts for no other reason than to look as though you are athletic?

Best, Mr. President

no, i wasnt an athlete, i just lift because i absolutely love it.

I wish I was cocked. It would be nice to be able to intimidate other bankers with my sheer size...expecially cockroach senior associates and VPs who I could intellectually eat for breakfast.

On a related note, I was reading this article the other night about the founding partners of Hicks Muse. It's no wonder they have raised so much money...one of the founding partners is stacked.

You're suggesting lifting weights isn't an athletic past time? I may be an ex-runner but lifting weights is one of the great joys of my life you fucking puggy-soft limp s.o.b.

It's about dedication, the pursuit of excellence. I read a great article about lifting weights in the NY Times a couple month's back. A trainer wrote:

"Whether the ideal is remotely attainable matters less than the pursuit. For one reason or another we are all in here each day. For one reason or another, we believe."

Great Shit.

I think that lifting is a nice thing for those that were once athletes. It is a way for them to continue to feel like they used to, despite the fact that they can no longer train like they did.

However, I always thought that the guys in college that spent their time in the weight room but weren't good enough to be recruited for a sport were, in some way, pathetic.

It is just my opinion.

And, Dan: I simply asked whether you were an Athlete or rather one of the guys that couldn't cut it. Since you were a Division I Athlete, I can totally respect why you still lift. No need to call me names. I still lift 4 days a week, as well, in an attempt to continue looking the way I did for so many years.
