how to switch groups for ft?

i'm gonna be doing my sa at an eb tech group on the west coast. i realized that i don't rly want to be limited to one industry and i think i would enjoy other groups within my firm better (which are mostly based out of nyc). Is it possible to ask to switch groups for full time, assuming I do well and get a return offer? If so, how does one best go about this?

Switching groups for a full-time position after completing a summer analyst (SA) stint is indeed a topic many interns are curious about. Based on insights from Wall Street Oasis, here's a structured approach to potentially making that switch:

  1. Perform Exceptionally During Your SA Program: First and foremost, excel in your current role. A strong performance not only increases your chances of receiving a return offer but also gives you leverage when requesting a group switch.

  2. Network Internally: Throughout your internship, take the initiative to network with employees in the group you're interested in switching to. Coffee chats and informal meetings can be a great way to express your interest and learn more about the group's dynamics and projects.

  3. Express Your Interest Early: Don't wait until the end of your internship to express your desire to switch groups. Start having conversations with HR and your current group's management about your career interests and goals early on. This gives them more time to consider your request and see where you might fit best.

  4. Be Prepared to Explain Your Reasoning: Have a clear and well-thought-out explanation for why you want to switch groups. Whether it's a better alignment with your long-term career goals or a stronger interest in the work the other group does, being able to articulate your reasons will help your case.

  5. Leverage Your School's Alumni Network: If your firm has a strong presence of alumni from your school, consider reaching out to them for advice and support in making the switch. They can offer valuable insights and may even advocate on your behalf.

  6. Understand the Firm's Policy: Some firms have formal processes for group switching, especially for transitioning from an SA to a full-time position. Make sure you understand these policies and follow the proper channels when making your request.

  7. Be Flexible and Open to Compromise: Sometimes, a direct switch might not be possible due to headcount limitations or other factors. Be open to compromise, such as starting in your original group and transitioning later or considering similar groups that might offer the exposure you're seeking.

Remember, while switching groups is possible, it requires a proactive approach, strong performance, and effective networking. Each firm's culture and policies around group switching may vary, so tailor your approach accordingly.
