How are the hours for UK summer interns?

Hey, wanted to ask how the hours are for UK IB summer interns? I have an internship at a Tier 3-4 bank that is on the rise. How are the hours in BB and EBs for other interns that may be interested.

Thanks from all the interns.

I think this question will have an "anything is possible" type of answer.

Summer is generally a quiet period, and the value that an intern can add is generally fairly limited in comparison to a seasoned Analyst or Associate when there is a live deal.

That having been said, and while I'm not advocating facetime, you shoould always ask your analysts, associates, and VPs where you can be helpful if you find yourself with nothing to do at, say, 8pm. So you should at least expect to work similar hours to the Analysts.

The hours that they work over the summer could be as low as maybe 10 or 12 hours on quiet days, but if there's a live deal you find yourself helping on, there could well be tasks that an intern would be capable of, so be prepared for scenarios like all-nighters, even at Tier 3 / 4 shops.

Typically BBs / EBs will work longer hours on average, but that too will depend so much by team and whether there's a live situation.

Wow Thanks for the detailed info!! Really appreciate it. If you are available I want to ask another question. Im in the relationships(called banking)/M&A/ECM division. (Other divisions are markets, debt financing). Im on the Relationships side of my division, but I want to be more involved in M&A. Would it be appropriate for me to ask if I can help around M&A? This way can I change my full time offer to M&A? There is also a person from the country that I am from, so hoping he could help me out with this as well. Any recommendations ?

`Sounds a whole lot like Santander - not sure I would put them as low as tier 3-4 (unless you mean in a tier list way then sure maybe) - but it sounds like you're in corporate banking (what they call 'banking'). I have a mate there, CB hours aren't bad at all you'll be out the office by 7 but it isn't really IB tbh

Regardless of the bank if they don't have interns in M&A it makes sense to show interest, but if they have interns specifically for the role it won't look great to the team you're with, and  the probably won't have capacity anyways.
