CC Soph Wanting To Transfer With Bad Stats. What are my most viable options?
Long story short but I’m a 24m sophomore at community college trying to figure out my next best move in regards to where to transfer/setting myself up for as much success as I can. Any advice is welcome.
Low high school gpa due to partying my final two years due to my parents divorce and being told I didn’t need college by my non degree successful mother (former HR head of major construction company with no degree). Graduated with a 2.7 (3.9 prior to junior year). Attempted community college while having to work a full time retail job to take care of myself and going to see my gf an hour away constantly. I failed 2 semesters with a gpa of .52 (yes ik) gpa due to bad time management, stress and depression. What a waste of 10 G’s. This was in 2018/19. Took time away and decided to take matters into my own hands. Re enrolled in a new CC last summer and was doing fine right until end of first semester/second due to depression and again overworking. Likely going to end up with a 3.27-3.3 gpa since I’ve scheduled my time accordingly and am getting straight A’s rn for final two semesters. Working on padding transfer resume with club involvement and a side project. Work experience is not relevant. Mensa member (not bragging just enjoy cognitive testing). Also self teaching VBA, Excel, etc. LGBT diversity candidate (not open and dating a girl but am considering all tactical moves)
Where should I attempt to transfer to for spring of 2024 to begin JR year? I’ve finally got my shit together in almost all aspects but am worried my past will haunt me. I can write a kick ass heartfelt essay and spin anything I need to. Money is no issue as I’m an independent student and my EFC is low, along with parents willing to co-sign loans for remaining 2 years. Being in this industry is what I’ve wanted to do since I was 10 (watched the MBS crisis unfold and found it incredibly interesting and followed markets ever since.) I plan to get a 4.0 at the new schools and immerse myself in the experience I’ve been craving for years. Don’t mind going MM or Boutique and lateraling down the line. IB or S&T preferred. Any advice and a list of prospective schools would huge so I can hit the ground sprinting at the new school.
Thank you for your time. I will break in mark my words.
Bump
you should re-enroll in another CC and get a 3.9-4.0 and then transfer to a top school (state, private, etc). Recruiting for summer internships starts sophomore spring semester in college. So if you transferred after CC, you would effectively have to go back years if you want to be competitive. If you transfer in as a junior, you're behind the eight ball against freshman/soph who have been getting finance/IB internships gunning for junior summer or FT recruiting. It is possible to break into IB late in the game but statistically very hard
Somehow land a gig at Big4, work for a few years, then get an MBA and break in as an associate. I wouldn’t try and transferring then doing an SA as a 26yo. - - Overall this is one hell of a Hail Mary so keep us updated and gl.
edit: “tactical moves” unethical but cracked me up.
this is definitely a hail mary. wouldn't it be expensive to drop 150-200k just to go to IB as an associate? but yeah IB has been very tough since many layoffs and offers rescinded and summer analyst programs shrank in the last year or so
This is my thought exactly, and while down the line it’s a possibility, I’d rather not waste extra time as I already have nor spend more in tuition. Also I’m not opposed to going MM in a reasonable COL city and moving up that way. I have 1-2 connections I can attempt to leverage but realistically my best move is to transfer to a reasonable school and network my proverbial ass off. Just curious any schools that could make sense?
I don't want to rain on your hard work man but doing IB or SnT isn't likely in the slightest. GPA doesn't mean much and since you aren't being pulled in via the MBA route I don't see how this is possible. I mean .52 GPA? Prove me wrong dude. Find a way to break in but it seems like Big 4 or F500 would be a better starting point.
Gpa resets after transferring, and I’m only included the next school’s gpa on resume. Not concerned in that department. Hey, there isn’t even a parade lol. My main goal here is to make it to a semi selective school, network my ass off, and lateral down the line. Mainly trying to figure out which schools might take me/have the best possibility for landing something reasonable. No one ever needs to know about a previous .52 gpa stint at cc almost 5 years ago. Call me Aaron Rodgers but I like a good Hail Mary.
finally a reset…IB recruiting coming back to “dating a girl but if LGBT is a viable route - I’ll take it” - the determination is there, next focus on execution. Whether you land IB or F500 idk but give us an update on diversity pathways you’re exploring.
If the above doesn’t work, how set are you on your gender identity?
In any reasonable world I would assume this was a joke, but I don’t believe I could pull off anything more than the B in LGBT. Plus potential hazard of being exposed and blacklisted. Not completely against it but long term it doesn’t seem viable.
That’s the spirit. If you can pull off L, getting IB will be peanuts. Would also help you comfortably stay away from gaps in CV during convos, plenty to discuss as is.
what state r u in? possibly a big state school for cheaper tuition like Ohio State and try to go to IB
Colorado. Was looking at some of the bigger public schools, as well as Villanova, Rutgers, UVA, William and Mary, and a couple of others.
Can't get into nova, UVA or W&M with a 3.2 Need to look at places like Madison, BU if you want schools with huge alumni base.
isnt that out of state tuition? why not go to boulder and go for IB in regional areas like denver?
Low EFC, and Denver had relatively limited opportunities. Also my girl went to CU boulder and expensive/not my cup of tea.
