May 2015 General Election (UK) - thoughts?
This is particularly aimed at those in the UK but interested in hearing other views all the same
With the May 2015 general election coming up and with it being predicted that there is strong chance of a Labour/SNP coalition government coming into power, I wondered what people thought the implications are for the City of London and those that work in it
Obviously Labour are much to the left of the Conservatives and there has been, in my opinion, some pretty worrying things said and policies proposed by those in the Labour party with regards to the City. The bankers bonus tax being one, although I'm sure companies would find a way round this (or at least I hope they would!)
I'm particularly interested because I'm due to start as an M&A analyst at a BB in London come July (2 months after the election) and have a feeling I may be joining right when the City starts going through a bit of a rough patch
As I say, very interested in anyone's thoughts on the upcoming election and it's affect on the City and the actual markets
I think the most worrying outcome for the city is not the result of the election but the referendum on britxit. If the UK leaves the EU, a new continental financial hub will automatically emerge/consolidate (frankfurt, paris, zurich) and steals market share from London. Then regarding bonus cap etc, I am no expert in UK politics but I presume any party is clever enough to know how UK economy depends on their financial industry and won't put at risk their competitive advantage. Just my two cents
You're not very familiar with Mr. Miliband, are you?
This is my worry. If we were dealing with rational people, I would agree with bakura. I don't think Miliband or Ed Balls are rational.
My idea has always been to move to America, particularly Florida, at some point, ideally after a fair few years in London. What happens in the next year or so in the UK may just speed that up a bit
I implore everyone to vote conservative.
I only of its immigration agenda. Usually extremist economical agenda always looks like Marxism. However, I don't think he'll get there. UK citizen are well educated and will not cede to populism in May (look at France in 2002). But again I am no expert and not very well informed on those issues. Just saying britxit vote is a reality, whatever may be the outcome of the election and that is sad and dangerous.
