Making a switch to AM from MBB

Currently I am working as a Business Analyst at a top consulting firm (think Deloitte, McKinsey) in Europe. But recently I have discovered that my interests actually lie on the buy side rather than consulting. Is there anyway to make a switch to an AM firm, my preference would be some type of elite boutique or equivalent of a middle market bank rather than companies like Black Rock, where I can become a portfolio manager in my early to mid thirties. I have started my role right out of undergrad for the consulting, and I haven't completed even a full year in consulting so far.

Would you recommend going for an MBA at Top 10 in order to break into AM, or would it be easier to make a direct switch to being an analyst? Please note that it would be ideal to make a switch from Europe to US, but a role in Europe especially London would be just as good.

Thanks in advance.

First time I've ever heard anyone putting Deloitte and McK in the same boat- you must be from Deloitte. I don't think you'd need a MBA necessarily. Try to get in touch with buy-side recruiters (networking) and get your name thrown in. If you went to a half decent undergrad, you'll get one or two bites.

Actually not from Deloitte but your post made me lol :) My undergrad was honestly a no-name school for finance people but more of a place where people who wanted Ph.D's went, only reason I broke in to the industry was due to my summer analyst gigs in consulting which I got via family connections. I will try to reach out to buyside headhunters, and could possibly ask a friend in HF to give me a few connections in the industry.

Another question, recently I have been thinking about getting into a PhD program myself for business administration or economics in US, as I am currently located in Europe and want to switch areas. I would probably leave it in the middle with an MS degree and take advantage of free tuition - stipend though, not gonna get a phd. How useful would that be for changing locations and possibly positioning myself better for a buy-side career?
