Quitting without anything lined up

Maybe it is bad, but it's not all bad.

Have decided to quit my IB job as an associate who was showing some potential. Been thinking about this for ~2 months, not rage quit.

The Hong Kong market is pretty much dead atm.

Honestly, not sure if I still want to do IB. IB in HK/China mainland is so vastly different from that in the US (and UK?).Β

Things I am going to do after quitting:

  1. Learn French (more than a beginner)

  2. Run my social media accounts (surprisingly, have already generated unstable revenue, but enough to cover rent for 3 months. Not a terrible thing to do)

  3. I am thinking hard about getting an online CS degree. It's pretty legit by now, and as a math major, I should fulfill all prerequisites/or with minimal effort. It's a really useful skill, putting "SWE vs. IB" aside.Β

Good luck and glad you didn't rage quit. Have done that before in the bull market (think 2019) and it took me a lot longer then expected to find a new job.Β

Aware of a medical resident dropout who did something similar for their social media / SaaS startups after quitting (worked on it for like 100+ hour weeks for a month or so and then started generating solid income). Owns two companies I'm aware of, he claims one clears 7 figures in revenue and the other one is in the 6 figures but has higher profit margins. Quit a surgical residency and is now pretty much making surgeon type money while being able to open up new revenue streams while keeping his current ones mostly passively / have it managed by someone else. He is an anomaly and I have also seen someone else who did something similar in finance and it ended up doing very bad long term (his Youtube account got banned / he didn't have any backup revenue streams to pull from).

JUST SAY WHEN YOU QUIT INSTEAD OF STUPID THINGS LIKE "THINK X" AHHHHHHH!!!!Β
