For the last 6 years I remember:

  • We used markdwon back in the day and there was no way to see how comments will look like before posting. So my first task was making the comments preview work. There was a separate button for that.
  • The next step was adding the live preview and this comment form that slides from the bottom. It was divided into 2 sections: one was used for entering the markdown and the second one was showing the live preview.
  • Then we've added the ability to add replies without the page reload.
  • Then new comments from other users started to be added to the page witout its reload, in real time.
  • Then we started collapsing the too deep threads. Pretty tough task actually, much more complicated than it sounds.
  • Around that time we've separated the vote types to useful and funny, changed the voting widget completely.
  • Then we've added the anonymous authoring options.
  • Then we had nightmare migration and replaced markdown editor with the current one (it is about to be replaced with the newer version soon).
  • I remember at least 2 big redesigns, we've switched 2 major versions of our CMS (and about to do another major version update), several times updated our front end approach (pure CSS -> CSS preprocessors -> storybook plus different steps in between to standartize the elements we have).

Plus I think I missed something, so yeah pretty much ruining it  with every update :)

I think the new design is pretty slick. Feels like we've gone from Standard to "Compact" in Outlook. Less scrolling, and easier to read.

I don't know... Yeah. Almost definitely yes.

Why does the website keep getting worse? New design feels like a pre-alpha version of reddit. Can't even make posts or check notifications on mobile.

Agreed! For someone who likes to pop in on their mobile, the text is just too small now, and the most helpful content is no longer boxed, making hard to sift through trolls/bumps to arrive at actual helpful content. Plz fix!

I disagree. The new WSO is cleaner and more functional than the old “hasn’t been updated since 2005” look. I almost exclusively use the site on mobile and after todays fix the site loads much quicker and smoother on my phone. The comment function on mobile is still a little buggy.

The main issue is when I try to change the “post under your username or anonymous…” field on their phone, I have to select the target option twice. When selecting it once, I cant scroll down to the Add Comment button (it repeatedly glitches). After going back to the field and selecting target option a second time, then Im able to scroll down and press the Add Comment button.

The new look is unusual, but it loads up way faster than before. Not sure whether that's the design or a new server or something.

I'm fine with it, but where is the damn "edit post" button now???

EDIT: Just found it....hidden in "..." option. Not a huge deal. Other small thing. I did like the previous highlighted box for the top comment better than this version with the green background. Again, not the end of the world either.
