Please can somebody explain rankings for Analysts in ER

I often read posts about ER and opportunities are often seen as more or less favourable depending on how the analyst is “ranked”. I see Roman Numerals (I think?) used to rank them, and am curious as to how this works? Can anyone in ER elaborate?

The Roman numerals you refer to might be "II", which stands for Institutional Investor. They are a media / magazine company that organizes an annual analyst poll process.

Every year, institutional investors that invest in equities (mutual fund, hedge fund, family office, pension fund, etc.) can vote for their favorite analyst by sector. There are many ways a sell-side analyst can add value to their investor (the buy-side) clients - access to management, channel checks, industry knowledge, company knowledge, great social events (yes), etc. So it ultimately becomes a popularity contest.

P.S. I am organizing my analyst voting process on Instagram this year soon. Come hang out.
