for those of you entered banking during down times

Can someone who has had experience in banking during the tough times such as 2001 comment on this? I am going to be a first year analyst right now and lots of people are start telling me that it's not worth it doing banking anymore because bonuses are gonna be nothing in the upcoming years and banks are not going to recover its profitability in a while.

Do you think it's still worthwhile to do it for the exit opportunities? Did you stay in banking during the recession years and do you think you made the right decision?

Bonuses in 08&09...

based on the direction of the market is heading, bonus will for sure suffer sigificantly.. maybe 1st yr will be lucky to get 30k.. this is the down cycle of banking.

concerns about exit opportunities in HK

I'll be starting as an analyst at a BB in HK, and am growing increasingly concern over the type of exit opportunities I would have. Would anyone pls. share some opinions on the possibilities of joining PEs or hedge funds in the U.S. after completing the analyst program in Asia?

I'm on a quarter system so I get out late June and I just found out that the training program is likely to begin in July 2. This is going to drive me crazy as I will have no time for at least a break before I sell my soul. Any thoughts?

I'm so sick of hearing about how the banking cycle is over and it's a bad time to join (i'll be a 1st year next summer).. so let's talk about the damn bonus, how bad is it gonna be for analysts this year and next year. I know it's going down from now (with some exceptions like GS) but by how much do you all think??

quick tax question

For those of you in NYC, say you make $100,000 total, how much do you take home? Assume federal is 28%, SS and Medicare: 8%, State& city: 10%, that's more than half paid in tax?

Do you get anything back in refund?

Last thing, base salary and bonus are treated the same, correct?

tax questionf for Americans working in abroad (Hong Kong)

How does it work exactly? I know that there's an $83,000 exclusion and for Hong Kong the housing exclusion is like $110,000 but am i still subject to withholdings for my monthly paycheck, or do i pay everything at once when i file?
