Curious GPA Question?
Lowest GPA you've seen get a job with a BB? I'm worried that not withdrawing from a class will screw me and was just seeing what the chances are..I currently have a pretty good GPA but it could be in danger if I don't withdrawal.
2.8 - BB ER. he's very passionate in finance though (eg: CFA before graduate, done reports, network aggresively)
Is he on WSO? Also, how did he network? ex. cold-email, alumni chat, etc.
he's not active; I do remember he made an account though. mostly linkedin & cold emails; his approach was actually pretty interesting since he directly mention if the team has any opening (attaching CV and a model + report he made).
ps: this is in Asia so might be different
It's literally impossible to finish the CFA before graduation. But to answer OP's question, 3.1 in IBD--played a varsity sport at a target school. He was a nice guy too, which helped.
not finish - took level I december and II in june - have level II by graduation
1) 3.0 was at a BB now at an EB 2)
I guess a pretty good resume was presented and networking was done aggressively?
im gonna bump this, I'd like to hear some more responses
I have a buddy who made it to a low EB/top MM firm junior year with a 3.0 flat. Varsity athlete at a top target, hardworking guy, very talented but his GPA was on the low side. He studied pretty hard for interviews and is likable, so he did not have too much trouble in the process after getting first rounds.
Thats awesome. He was at a target so it was probably easier to gauge interest to bankers I assume. But it was probably the likability that did it.
made it to superdays at GS/MS/JPM s&t with 2.1 gpa from a top stem program. They never asked about my GPA
Mindblown! Did you remove the GPA from your resume?
Getting to that point though is still incredibly hard. If you have a low GPA just focus on getting a relevant job and network. Take your GPA off and move your experience above education on your resume. Lead with your strength; which if you have a low GPA needs to be technical ability and work ethic.
no gpa on resume. Had experience at a hf though. (not a top hf, but most interviewers have heard of it before hence that became like 90% of the interview conversation)
yeah. no gpa on resume. Also worked at a large well-known LS fund; 90% of interview conversation was about my work there.
I don't think there's specific groups or firms that care more or less, just individuals who will or won't ding you for it in an interview. My guess would be that if it's not on there and you land the interview in the first place then it's not going to be a deal breaker. The only firm that might totally shut you down over something like that is GS, which I've seen happen, or maybe a really elite boutique like Evercore.
thanks
3.2ish. Probably some family connections involved but you can't blame the kid for that - if you got it, use it!
I had 2.9 at a non-target and I'm at a BB
were you a lateral or SA?
Also for both what did you internships did you do before BB? Are you in IBD?
This is an interesting thread to read. I talked to an associate at JPM and he was telling about how the gpa CAN hurt you even if you have a 3.5ish because some people view gpa is highly inflated at non-targets vs targets, when in actuality the opposite is true. I get where he is coming from because nowadays a 3.5 is too vanilla for BB IBD. He told me that his gpa (3.5 at non-target) hindered his abilities in some buyside gigs because he didn't have the big name school or "top" gpa.
That's what I have heard as well...I would assume the GPA's would be inflated at a non target as well because that's all they know and some of the times they could be correct.
not at BB but at 2nd tier strategy firm with a Deloitte S&O, OW, etc)
what did he/she do to make that happen?
Well I had 5 internships under my belt ranging from F500 corp strat to summer internships from Accenture, BCG etc. Country I interned at does not extend offers to interns but I was referred by PL and Principal at BCG to the firm I am at now for the job. If you ask me how I got the internships, it was through lots of networking, acing the interviews and simply doing well at the job / being a good person to them so that people would have good things to say abou tme.
Isn't this the same as how every year Harvard will accept someone with a 1000 SAT score?
Just because it can happen, doesn't mean it is likely to happen and that you should count on it.
