A Friend

Hello

I have a friend who told me I got divuldge this info:

He is 22, graduated from Boston University and works for a MM bank, and he just hates the firm. He has another job lined up outside of banking and never really wants to return to banking but wonders in his future endeavors after this corporate stint, which he says he will not leave before two years, will look back to his 4 months at a bank.

The reasons he hates it:

When interviewing there were 7 people on the team. He did not care for 2, liked 2, and really liked the 3 remaining. The 3 he really liked left recently for a HF. Now to him this is a new situation and one he no longer cares for.

What are the long term ramifications because at least to us it seems as if people shy away from leaving early because they will not get hired for the reason but if he has a job lined up for the next 2 years lets say how will it affect future jobs and graduate school?

Well if they ask what did you do the 6 months after graduation, lie? Also, the fact that someone has a little exposure might help a little no?

I don't have a response, but my friend thinks your friend might have a tough time since the market is crap. My friend thinks your friend should stick it out for a bit longer and hen start talking to headhunters and try to jump straight to the "next step", whether that be PE, HF, corporate, etc. My friend thinks there is no need to lengthen one’s time as an analyst in banking.

I am not sure what I think and take no responsibility for this, this is just what my friend thinks.

Maybe I was not clear...

He has a job he wants to take. He wants to know if in 2-3 years he applies to a new job or school will they ask what just 6 months?

Should not be an issue so long as you have a good reason. Employers do not like 'push' reasons, they like to hear 'pull' reasons. In other words, they dont like to hear 'i stayed in it only 6 months because i could not stand the environment'. What they like is '6 months in, a senior partner i had worked for a little while with was moving to start something or to another firm and asked if i'd like to go along and build something from the ground up', so i went.

You get the drift. That said, you can only do something like the above once, very maybe twice, in a career. Thats my view.
