Toronto Big 6 SA Recruitment Question — Captains

Question for Toronto bankers
For schools that have a set recruiting team at the Big 6 banks (I think usually 2-3 analysts/associates), is it worth speaking to other people at the company? Are they able to push you?

Yeah it is absolutely worth talking to other people. When I was at a Canadian bank I had kids reaching out and I would tell their school captain we spoke.

While recruiting is a regimented process, bankers are human beings. If your friend that you spend 80+ hours a week with on a deal says a kid is chill, you will take that into account. Obvious nepotism bonus points if the person is a senior, but I will also say that knowing an MD is not a slam dunk. Not all MDs are created equal, some are in their job because of attrition not skill, and not everyone listens if someone says someone is good

No one gets “pushed” stop trying to nepotism your way into these processes. We see little dipshits who think they can just weasel their way into a job. It’s fair game in the process, and do the best job you can.

Nepotism? I was under the impression that you have to network in order to increase the chances to get an interview?

Who are you kidding?

Canadian groups are all nepotism. Forget Big5, even in the BB/EBs. Every time there was an outstanding candidate, either an MD or a Director makes you skip him and pick the barely competent kid. Making your job harder down the road.
Got sick of that shit, glad I left.

I don't think you have gone through recruiting in Canada. For any semi-target+ trying to recruit for big 5, there's "recruiting captains" who are alumni of each school that lead recruiting efforts for their specific school. It's not nepotism, it's just standard networking process to network with the captains to increase your chances.

Hey, seems like you're a bit aware of the recruitment process in Canada! Do you think it's beneficial to talk to non-alum? I was thinking maybe I should only talk to non-alum from non-targets since semitargets+ would most likely focus on recruitment from their school — thoughts?

Good question - no, it is not really worth your time speaking to more than 2+ people at the same company, imo, especially if you're already talking to the people involved in recruiting directly. Much better to meet with 1-2 people at each of the firms you want to recruit with, versus meet like 3-5 people at a few firms only.

Let's run this through. You met with a recruiting captain, you either: a) made a good enough impression and now the captain likes you and will push for you or b) you did not make a good enough impression and the captain doesn't feel inclined to push. Someone else telling the captain his or her opinion, is unlikely to change that captain's opinion (or needs to be senior enough to do so).

Thank you for the detailed response!

Quick question: As the captain, do you yourself (alongside the other captains from your school team) choose who gets 1st rounds from your school? Or do you push names to HR?
