Investment Banking Comps Middle East

Hi guys,

I hope everyone is doing well

I'm an intern in IB in London (European background) and I'm interested in a career in IB in the Middle East (Dubai) but I want to understand what are the pros/cons

  • What is the comps there ? (BofA, GS, MS, JPM, Rothschild) I heard USD 7.5k but not sure

  • What are the exits ? PE funds in this region are quite different from London

  • Is it possible to move in IB/PE in London after a couple of years in Dubai ?

  • What is the culture/worklife balance/hours there ? A lot of European in this region if I'm correct

Feel free to share any thoughts on this

Thank you in advance

A

Can you get away with only speaking English or do you often need to be bilingual to work over there?

Most Helpful

1)

  • Average comp for A1 is around 7.5k - 8.5k

2)

  • Exits usually are SWFs or family offices (if that's something that interests you) and corpdev (although limited)

3)

  • I know of a few analysts who went to London last year to PE or BB as associates but most people stick to the Middle East (large paycut to move to London due to taxes and lower salary)

4)

  • Hours were brutal during 2021 and to some degree during early 2022 (but mitigated due to extensive hiring during the end of 2021, early 2022), its getting better now given the much larger teams (some/most banks doubled their analyst numbers). Some clients are very demanding, you may be pulling 100+ hours weeks while only being staffed on one deal.
  • I would say hours are worse then London but perhaps better then US.
  • Expect to work basically every Sunday if staffed on a Saudi deal (i.e. you will only get one day of weekend).

-The people I work with are very chill and great culture between employees (from MD to Analyst)

You guys know what's the avg comp for VP / D level in Dubai?

HH keep telling it's in line with the US but find it hard to believe (e.g. UK is significantly lower)

Thanks
