IB and Banking jobs with marketing aspects
Here is a question:
I will be looking into jobs in London soon, having a BA and an MA in business administration and Chinese.
I am quite interested in working in a field of international business, in mergers and acquisitions involving China (as a Western white person) however I am not too good in quant and am not a fan of crunching numbers.
More a communications, PR, advertising and brand management type of person.
However, am very interested in stocks, trading and Asset Management, and anything involving M&A and Chinese firms globalization. More strategy, investing side... not coming up with derivative pricing models...
I want to know certain job titles that would fit what I described that is in:
-finance industry
-IB related (working for big banks like HSBC) preferably in NYC, London or Shanghai
-has marketing and communications elements
-involves a lot of travel (even rotations in the beginnging stages) initially
-mainly China-US investments
-can use language (Chinese) and presentation skills
I have no previous experience and am looking at analyst/entry positions.
Somewhat related jobs I found:
financial consulting, private wealth management, investor relations
Maybe look into a position involving deal syndication. Not sure if you've seen Wall Street Warriors, but there is a female character in it, Sandra, who does something similar. Definitely worth checking out...
What are you the fucking Riddler?
You want something in M&A, in China, but you're not good with numbers and you want something that's more communications, PR, advertising focused....BUT still M&A. It should also have a trading and asset management aspect but still involving M&A...it just sounds insanely customized.
good luck. i think this will be near impossible unless you have a harvard mba or some shit. then you can probably get an okay job anywhere in the world, but getting that a job like that?
uhh i know more than a few firms off the top of my head that do stuff like that, but they need people who are numbers focused. no need for someone who probably wouldn't cut it in m&a in the states and at best has the reading comprehension of a 3rd grader. i took spanish in middle school, but you don't see me applying for latam.
We have some VP that does shit like this but he's a fucking rockstar and has worked in almost every aspect of business previous to this role (corp strat, corp dev, strat consulting, IB, etc)
Marketing at I Banks? (Originally Posted: 06/25/2009)
I know that this forum is not really focused on back-office stuff, but can anyone fill me in on what marketing teams are like at JPM or GS? Do job candidates go through the same process as analysts and associates? Are marketers seen as complete serfs compared to the front-office folks in the company?
For a marketer looking to get into a place like GS, should I just submit an unsolicited resume? I haven't seen any job recs from them ever.
Thanks...
Is marketing really back office?
I assume banks outsource their marketing efforts...
Marketing? I dunno, all of banking is pretty much marketing. But straight up advertisements on TV and such are likely outsourced to specialty firms.
Firmwide marketing is composed of a few sr ppl (that likely coordinate with outsourced agencies).
What marketing are you referring to?
The conventional marketing that also exists in other industries or the brand of marketing which in some instances is the equivalent of the sales (institutional) desk in S&T? The latter is very much a FO job (many European banks do have prescribed marketing roles), while the former is not exactly existent in an IB context (not in the parlance as described anyway)...

I am graduating senior, engineering major from top state school. I got an summer internship offer from Goldman Sachs as well as McKinsey. I am planning to get an MBA from top school after few years. My primary interest is MBA - marketing. So, do you think accepting Goldman Sachs internship will help me in any way, if i want to go for marketing ? Or will be helpful if i go for MBA- general management ? Please kindly guide. There is huge difference in internship salary of these two firms. I want to make decision in terms of MBA concentrations in future. Also does Investment banking firms hires MBA in marketing or general management?
Goldman is IB and McKinsey is traditional Management Consulting? If you want to go to a top Bschool and end up in marketing or general management after, it really won't matter that much which one you pick. If I had to choose, I'd give a slight edge to McKinsey given that they send a lot of people to top Bschools and the work would be more relevant to general management roles.
MCK...and you really need to improve your writing/English skills.
Can I ask what you plan on doing with an MBA in marketing?
Product development or Brand Management kind of stuff. But, do they really hire Marketing majors or General Management majors (I mean, MBA specialization) in Investment banks ?
