Difference between JP Morgan and JP Morgan Chase

I've always thought that they were the same. Apparently not. The big money/main jobs are at JP Morgan (investment banking) and what goes on at JP Morgan Chase?

Are J.P. Morgan and J.P. Morgan Chase the same?

Although the naming of J.P. Morgan and J.P. Morgan Chase are very similar, they both offer different solutions to consumers and institutions.

@l2010" gives a nice overview of the naming:

l2010:
Chase=marketing name for retail side
JP Morgan Chase= name of the company
JP Morgan= marketing name for securities side

J.P. Morgan refers to the overarching firm as a whole. This part of the business is responsible for the investment banking arm, wealth management, and private banking (ER, S&T, IBD).

Chase is responsible for commercial retail, retail banking, and card services for everyday consumers.

Is Morgan Stanley the same as J.P. Morgan?

While the naming may indicate that they are similar companies, they in fact are independent entities. J.P Morgan's grandson, Henry Morgan, founded Morgan Stanley in 1935. Morgan Stanley is another standalone investment bank and does not currently have any relations with J.P. Morgan.

The difference is that while J.P. Morgan refers to everything, you will usually hear it with respect to Banking, Wealth Management and the Private Bank, ER, S&T, IBD, and everything else associated with the Investment Bank. J.P. Morgan Chase, on the other hand, is usually used when discussing the Retail and Commercial Banking side.

When i interned there in NY a couple years back all our emails were "@jpmchase.com"

think the way ppl call it sometimes depends on the time they've been there. I say JPMC

"If you want to succeed in this life, you need to understand that duty comes before rights and that responsibility precedes opportunity."

JPMorgan Chase is the parent company of J.P. Morgan and Chase and is responsible for their administration and corporate governance.
