Confronting Senior Bankers
Work at a mid-tier BB and I have usually been on lean teams. Recently had a VP that joined on my team that already has a VP. I don't know how this worked out the way it did. Anyways, it's like subtly clear that he tries to avoid as much as work as possible and the only real value add is reviewing work and making sure all the processes are running smoothly, meaning things are getting scheduled, followup materials are being sent and etc but obviously he gets all the associates and analysts to do this shit. So that we are seeing the full picture, he stays up late to review work and make sure things are getting done, and he is not fully unethical either in the sense that he will try to manage team as best he can by understanding people's capacities and not fully throwing them under the bus, but deep inside, I know he wants to avoid work and that character itself bothers me as a team member. There are certain responsibilities that each person on the team has, but this guy does not carry that so makes me think he is not carrying enough weight and therefore is someone I do not want to work with. How would you handle or confront this senior banker? Nice person but not respectable and therefore want to say some shit to his face instead of dealing with manager. Don't say burning bridges and that type of consequences and shit because someone needs to say something to this person.
Looks like we found the VP OP is talking about.
OP is asking to get fired in this climate.
“confronting senior (to you) banker” sure as fuck isn’t on my bingo card for 2023 action items
OP here. You should seek a therapist and God. And also take classes where you learn to read. Core responsibility of VP is to sketch out the big picture and help create materials with MDs. Many VPs I have worked with have taken responsibility to create materials and this is certainly not one of the things he does.
Not necessarily. If the juniors are incompetent, VPs can't simply "sketch out the big picture."
Why are you opining about what he thinks "deep inside." Are you a mind reader?
Solely based on the reasoning in this post, I wonder whether the VP simply doesn't trust you to do good work.
This would be a really funny satire post
cant believe the nerve of this VP
Sounds like my VPs. Pretty normal for a VP to not touch the materials and just review and tweak.
This is completely normal for a VP. It's literally their job to review work, manage the process and keep track of everything. My VPs only do things themselves when it regards more complex text (i.e. slides on the strategic rationale of a certain transaction) or when we are in a time crunch and they know that it would take too long to comment, have someone else do it and then review again.
A VP who delegates to juniors, reviews work but doesn’t actually create the slides, and makes sure the internal processes are running smoothly?
What a douche.
Definitely call him out one night in the bullpen for shirking his duties.
Dipshit analysts these days and I can’t even lateral in this market smh
Probably because you are incompetent
Yall are fucking missing the point. It's not what he does, it's who he is that bothers me. These type of people indirectly take energy away from those who work hard and influence those not strong enough to stand up against him and those who don't act upon their values meaning if they see a VP who tries to get away with work, they will do the same when they see an opportunity and the VP does not care. Terrible leadership results in reduced effectiveness of teamwork and lowered trust, which ultimately hurts the long-term effectiveness of the team.Yes VPs role is to review work and manage processes but it also their job to step in and drive materials and this often means creating new content. This why I mentioned what type of tier bank I work at, perhaps differs from bank to bank, which is why I sought out this community's opinions. You should all seek God.
Honestly man this sounds like a troll post but I'll assume not. You're mad the VP doesn't sit around and arrange logos and churn out slides? The entire job of the VP is execution management while building out their client book. I have no clue what you're mad at - that he doesn't want to do any "real work" so he's a bad teammate? You need to stfu and do your job bro and let the VP do his
Additionally, its hard to take you seriously when you type at a 8th grade level
This dude is invoking god/telling people to seek god in every réponse, there’s no way he’s being serious lol
Bro go seek a damn high school counselor to explain investment banking roles to you and then seek the fuckin’ unemployment line cus even God ain’t gonna help your dumb ass survive in this industry as long as you keep expecting your VPs and above to crank out materials alongside you
This is a funny post. The only time VP step in to craft materials if the junior guys fuck up and incompetent. Otherwise, never seem a VP put together any materials besides from slide that require a lot of word smithing. Lol
Spot on champ. I think you should walk right up to him and give him a piece of your mind lol. That would go over great.
So…you just don’t like him?
