Pivot into role as VC analyst or transition into role at FAANG/other well known tech/engineering role?
Let me preface with the following:
My ultimate goal is to get into GSB. I am applying in 2.5 years. A couple of VCs are my mentors, they are both GPs at small funds (~$50m per). I am already into Darden deferred round but want to go M7 and ideally H/S.
I started as the second employee at a no-name engineering consulting firm at the age of 15 (I'm now 23.) Together with the company leadership we grew the company to a ~$5m evaluation, but haven't exited yet and I've kind of squeezed everything out of the company from a resume standpoint besides becoming the CEO/COO.
All things equal, which would affect my chances at H/S the most, and let's assume I already have offers for both (even though I don't right now):
1) I get an analyst role with one of the VCs pre-MBA for 1.5 years (no-name VC fund, but decent size)
2) I go to FAANG or perhaps a well-known startup in an engineering role for 1.5 years
Both VCs are in the energy space, and so am I. So I see potential alignment in terms of what makes sense to adcoms in terms of career uniformity if I go the analyst route. And it would somewhat make sense to jump at this point to a role where I'm familiarizing myself with the entire energy industry as opposed to stay in an engineering role. Also note I could get a rec letter from one of these VCs easily.
However, I also see the potential of a role at a more well-known company boosting my chances by virtue of the pedigree of a company like that. I have to engage in a more formal job search / engage more with recruiters if I want to go this route.
What do you think produces better chances at H/S?
