REPE Help

Hi all,

I'm currently a student-athlete pursuing my MBA at a non-target school. My undergraduate degree is in finance with a high GPA, and although real estate was not my major focus, I did take the only RE class offered at my business school. Now, I'm eager to transition into the field of real estate and have secured an internship for the upcoming summer at a boutique investment firm. This will be my first real-world experience in the industry, as my athletic commitments have previously occupied most of my time.

I'm reaching out for advice on potential career paths and opportunities within the real estate sector, particularly in Texas. Despite my academic achievements, I recognize that my lack of hands-on experience might put me at a disadvantage. Additionally, I'm uncertain about the hiring prospects at the firm where I'll be interning; I'm not sure if they typically hire entry-level candidates.

To bolster my credentials and enhance my chances of securing a competitive role in real estate, I've already completed a modeling course and have been actively networking. However, I'm open to any further suggestions or insights from fellow professionals in the field.

Thank you all in advance.

I actually think you're in a pretty good spot since you've already secured a RE investment internship. If you want to further bolster your resume you could get Argus certified. I would also make sure you can build a financial model from scratch in 4hrs, as most shops will probably put you through some type of financial modeling test. I wouldn't worry too much about not having prior experience because you should be applying for analyst roles (0-2 years experience), so your competition will be more or less in the same boat. Also keep and open mind. You don't need to go into REPE straight out of your MBA, although if you do, that is great. Apply for IS, AM, Dev, capital market, lending, etc...all of these roles will provide you with many transferable skills into REPE and are great areas to start, so cast a wide net esp in this economy
