Post-MBA PE recruiting
Hey all,
I know the topic of switching from IB to PE post MBA has been discussed several times on this forum. However, was wondering if there are any insides around how the recruiting process works? Is it like in IB where you are expected to network your way into an interview or is really all driven by recruiters? What are successful strategies people are employing to make the move?
I am a M7 MBA grad who has worked IB for the last couple of years and who is trying to get into an investing seat (associate / sr. associate level). I am working for an EB have some announced deals on my resume.
Would appreciate any tips, tricks and best practices as right now I am mainly talking to recruiters rather than to folks at PE shops.
Thanks all!
Hey there!
Navigating the post-MBA PE recruiting jungle can indeed be as tricky as swinging from tree to tree in a dense forest. Here's the lowdown based on the most helpful WSO content:
Networking: It's not all about recruiters. Your own networking efforts can be just as crucial. Reaching out to alumni from your M7 MBA program who are in PE, attending industry events, and connecting with former colleagues can open doors that recruiters might not have access to.
Recruiters: They do play a significant role, especially at the initial stages. Firms like CPI and HSP are big names in this space. They can help you get your foot in the door, but it's your job to walk through it.
Strategy: A successful strategy often involves a mix of networking, working with recruiters, and leveraging your own experience. Highlight your EB experience and any big deals you've worked on. This is your banana – it makes you appealing to PE firms.
Direct Approach: Don't be shy to reach out directly to PE firms. Sometimes, the direct approach can demonstrate initiative and set you apart from other candidates.
Preparation: Be ready for the technical side of interviews. Brush up on LBO modeling and make sure you can talk intelligently about your deals and the rationale behind them.
Patience and Persistence: The PE recruiting process can be lengthy and competitive. Stay persistent, follow up regularly, and don't get discouraged by the occasional setback.
Remember, every vine you swing on brings you closer to that coveted PE seat. Keep your spirits high, your approach strategic, and your suit pressed. Good luck out there!

insides? are you serious?
You’re facing a uphill battle right now though because the market is awful and full of post-MBA PE people with many years of buyside experience looking for the same jobs. Transitioning from banking to PE at this point in your career is never easy but is unfortunately compounded by market conditions.
Keep working the headhunter route but direct networking is your best bet. Hopefully people who went to the same MBA. Outside of that, one ‘in’ is to absolutely crush a deal for a PE client and off-the-record ask if they would be interested in hiring you. If you impress them with your capabilities in a live environment it helps to overcome the fact that you don’t have direct PE experience.
You might have to network down-market, too. Correct take that the market is completely fucked for top MBAs who all have reputable PE funds and good experience not seeing any open seats. Almost makes me want to crawl back to my prior fund....almost...
